This Post contains several real former submissions and some created specifically for this test along with some fictional commentary by users created for this purpose.
The goal for the Candidates is to read each Post and review the comments to decide if, what, and when Moderator intervention is necessary.
In some cases nothing may be wrong at all, in others there may be a problem with the Post itself or a issue with the user comments.
The Moderator action should state the rule violation where necessary or sometimes just be used as a way to steer the conversation away from derailing the intent of the Post.
Your options as a Moderator in this test are:
- Remove the comment
- Remove the Post
- Make a Moderator comment only
- Make a Moderator comment and sticky it to the Post
- Lock the Post
- Ban the user (3 day/7 day/14 day/permanent)
If you are a candidate please use this format for your responses.
Example: u/EpicJourneyuMan [MOD] (Post 6)
**RogerVector* This is a violation of Rule 1 and should be removed along with the user being permanently banned.
There was some thought of having all of the responses private in Mod Mail so that the candidates couldn't get useful hints from the others but it seems like this is also something the community can have fun commenting on, and there is no better test than real user comments. Having real comments that real subscribers make in this thread that the candidates can wield their potential future moderator powers with by using the [MOD] preface seems like a reasonable experiment that will add some variety - but if things start to get out of hand or it turns out to be a bad idea we'll just remove the offending commentary.
The Candidates that get the first consideration are those who expressed interest in the recent "We are officially over 200k subscribers" sticky Post:
However, if you, the reader, would like to apply just use the same format with the "[MOD]" preface.
Note and Warning to users commenting: The Rules still apply and your comments will be Moderated the same way as any other Post - so please don't get caught up in trying to play a role, that's what the Test examples are for.
On to the Test.
POST ONE:=================================== The impressive tech news that time forgot - movies, videos, and TV shows have been being retroactively edited since 2011
📷
News & Media In a way, this seems to behave like an Effect because virtually nobody seems to remember that this happened...
When I say "retroactively" I don't mean that they
"have always been that way" now, I mean that an episode of a popular TV program or other older media is being edited with different backgrounds, billboards, soft drinks, and even Sporting events on the television in a bar scene from a rerun episode of an old favorite sitcom.
So it’s not hard to imagine this ability also being able to do something like alter the
Back to the Future van if you see
this video at around the the 50 second mark...and keep in mind that this has been being
done for at least nine years for advertising.
In 2014 it was big News that old music videos, TV shows, and rebroadcasts were being edited with new product placement and the tech was featured in
Rolling Stone magazine, TV News,
Late Night shows, and continued to have many
articles following the progress of the technology that was being used since
at least 2011. It was and still is a pretty big deal - but honestly, how many people remembered this without me bringing it up?
It doesn't take a lot of imagination to envision how technology like this could be abused and one of the linked articles even describes how AI algorithms can be used to edit digital content online.
It occurs to me that this seemingly benign altering of background imagery may actually have an effect on the psyche that one would
hope is unintentional in that what we remember subconsciously may trigger a form of cognitive dissonance when the imagery doesn't match up with the expected scene stored in memory - i.e. the mind notices
something is off about it.
I say
"hope is unintentional" because during the course of my research in to memory implantation I read several articles that explained that the best tools to use for altering memories upon recall were sleep deprivation and cognitive dissonance because the mind is more open to the power of suggestion in these states.
The suspicious side of me can easily see this being done intentionally to make the subliminal messaging "stick"...but of course corporations would always act ethically right?
I'm not saying
Mirriad is a bad company or anything ,
they're still at it, and other companies have joined the fray as well now but who else is using similar technology?
...and why is nobody talking about it?

Comments: **IAmBecky:* I love Pokemon is this what happened to his black tail?
**NiQuil:* What are you 9 years old? The Mandela Effect is stupid.
**LeveItToCleaver:* This whole thing seems like something children made up
**Awesomo420:* I can totally see this being used by shady characters to gaslight and influence people. In fact, this totally seems like something that was dreamed up by DARPA or some kind of MKUltra program.
**AllSeeingI33:* More like the Freemasons, they're involved in just about everything.
**DaringDew:* Yes...I see
**MentalMagellan:* I'm not sure the OP really understands what "cognitive dissonance" is or why this has anything to do with the Mandela Effect but he is right about sleep deprivation having a dramatic effect on the psychological state of human beings or any mammal for that matter.
I think this is just an example of Television and Advertising executives using technology to improve sales and ratings.
POST TWO=================================== Hey Guys Check out my YouYube Channel - we talk a lot about the Mandela Effect and we have a store that sells cool merchandise related to it too! I think you all would like it and the merchandise is top notch! we have "Monopoly Guy" coffee mugs (picture link), Pokemon with a black tail T- shirts, and a whole slew of Mandela Effect related items (pictures link).

POST THREE================================= The Sinbad Genie Movie - complete analysis
📷
This is far and away the biggest ME for me personally, there is nothing else like it that I have learned of so far - in that, it is not a simple misspelling, physical trait in a logo design, misquoted line of dialogue, or anything else that can be rationally explained...It has been erased from existence!
Even the people involved like Sinbad himself claim there is
no such thing yet everyone I talk to remembers it in some fashion (if they're old enough to hit the demographic).
So, I was taught very well how to debate things and the primary lesson in debate tactics is being able to take any side of the issue and still win (this shouldn't be about winning - but that's how debate teams work).
The first thing I will tell you is that this is a very real thing, but I am going to start by deliberately trying to dismantle my own argument...here it goes:
- Sinbad himself states that he never was involved in a movie where he played a genie
- The covemovie poster of the 1995 movie "Houseguest" has his head coming out of a mailbox on the left hand side which to some, might subconsciously be remembered as a genie coming out of a bottle
- Sinbad always dressed with incredibly bad fashion sense that kind of portrayed him as "genie like" or the ever adventurous "Sinbad the Sailor" intentionally
- There was another movie called "Kazaam!" staring Shaquille O' Neil that came out in 1995 where Shaq played a genie that helped out a lonely boy
- The movie was never widely released, so maybe people are confusing it with a comedy sketch he performed instead of actually seeing a movie - they just heard other people talking about it and assumed it was a real movie without ever actually seeing it themselves.
I think that pretty much covers that side of the debate - now my turn:
-I managed a Video Store back in the "heyday" of the video rental business and was responsible, with my uncle (he was the owner - I owned/managed and dealt primarily with the videogame side) for ordering the upcoming "New Release Titles for rental as they became available
- I took it upon myself to order two copies of the Sinbad genie movie without consulting with him first because they were such a great deal at half the price of a normal "New Release" back in 1994
- In fact, I ordered the second one in a bundle with another movie which I think may have been "Invisible Mom" with Dee Wallace Stone and written by W.C, Martell, but am not sure this was the title - but the logo of the Production Studio was similar
- The cover had the word "Sinbad" in font bigger than the Title and had Sinbad facing left with a kind of raised eyebrow and his arms crossed facing in side profile to the left
- The movie was actually a children's movie and not an adult audience oriented Comedy, which led to a lot of returns to the store with people saying "there is something wrong with this tape" - which to my chagrin, led me to having to watch the movie to find the supposed damaged portion of the film multiple times (honestly, I always thought these people just wanted a free rental)
- I can't remember the Title - but it seems like it was one word
- The movie only had one funny scene in it (at least to me) and it went like this:
The lamp is rubbed for the first time by two kids - an early teen boy, and his little sister who looks to be around 5 years old or so in their living room by the fireplace while their single dad is out of the house running an errand - the boy rubs the lamp and "Sinbad" appears with full genie attire...turban, ridiculous spiral upturned shoes, ear rings, silk pants and shirt, and I believe a green/blue vest but can't say for sure.
Sinbad stretches his arms out wide in the smoke filled room and says something like "I am the genie of the lamp" and the kids freak out! The little girl screams out "Aaaaagh! It's a kidnapper!" - or something like that as they run away
- After Sinbad calms them down, he explains that for releasing him from the lamp they will be granted three wishes and the boy is skeptical and wishes for something stupid that flew...either a flying skateboard or magic carpet - but I'm leaning more towards the carpet
- The wish is granted and the kids are amazed! and agree amongst themselves to use the other wishes on something special and important - the little girl asks for her mother back and Sinbad shows his tender, emotional side by saying "I'm afraid I can't do that" (not sure if this was because the mom had died, or the parents were separated and he couldn't make people love each other - this is 22 years ago after all)
- So after agreeing to save the last two wishes, and save one to bring a wife (or their old mom) to help out their lonely, depressed dad - the girl breaks her favorite doll and wastes a wish having the genie fix it - shortly after, the boy comes up with an idea for the second wish and the girl has to tell him that she already used it...
- So, with one wish left, the climax of the movie takes place at a pool party involving the Dad, his Boss, and a bunch of clients
- During this scene a film technique is used similar to that used in "The gods must be crazy" where the speed is intentionally sped up to make things look more "cartoon like and funny" - but it ended up just looking stupid and lame. And this is where the wished for "flying thing (I think carpet)" appears and knocks a bunch of people into the pool - which includes the mean Boss
- they have some kind of happy ending, but honestly - I just was looking for the reported "problem with the tape"...it wasn't a good movie at all and except for that scene where the genie appears, wasn't funny at all
- When my uncle sold the store years later, he specifically pointed at those two tapes I ordered and said " I hate that @#$*ing movie - it never even paid for itself after all these years!
So there you have the gist of it, if you can tell me another movie that has two kids and a genie that looks like Sinbad or where one of the wishes is fixing the doll, I'd love to hear about it.
Please, please, PLEASE! don't even bring the Shaq movie in to this conversation - I can't emphasize enough that it has absolutely
nothing to do with this movie...

Comments: **LeaveItToCleaver:* Maybe, just maybe, this one gets me but I'm sure I am confusing it with another movie and you probably are too.
**Awesomo420:* This is how I came to discover the Effect, it totally was a real movie and I just can't believe it totally disappeared like this.
Maybe there is some kind of technology at work that can implant and alter memories? I'm not ready to buy-in to the parallel universe theories just yet but this completely baffles me.
**AllSeeingI33:* It's the Jews they completely run Hollywood and there is obviously something about it they don't like. You should check out "The Elder Scrolls of Zion".
**Awesomo420:* I'm Jewish, I guarantee you that we don't run around making children's movies disappear.
**IAmBecky:* I am too young to remember this movie but I asked my dad about it and he TOTALLY remembers it. He's actually freaking out about it now and I'm like "I told you this was real" hahahehe
**NiQuil:* What does your mommy say?
**IamBecky:* Why are you so mean?
**NiQuil*: I'm not mean, I'm an adult telling you to grow up
**MentalMagellan:* I see that the OP tried to debate himself to make his case more believable but this is an obvious case of confabulation.
It is a very well understood psychological phenomenon that explains better than half of the Mandela Effects that I read on here.
I know that that the OP said not to bring
Kazaam into this but conflating the memories of this Shaquile O'Neil movie (who also happens to be black) with other movies like
Aladdin and the
Sinbad the Sailor films is all that this is.
There, I solved the Mandela Effect for you.
**DaringDew:* Yes...I see
POST FOUR================================= I was watching the movie JAWS the other day and I was shocked to find out that Hooper survives! I totally remember him getting killed in the shark cage! Does anybody else remember that or am I going crazy? Comments: **LeaveItToCleaver*: No mate, just no
**MentalMagellan*: You are confusing it with the book.
POST FIVE=================================== Don't call it a PsyOp...Let's call it Memetic Engineering.
📷
Theory Have you noticed the conspicuous lack of newly reported Mandela Effects lately?
I'm not suggesting that there is not a constant infusion of new people learning of the Effect or experiencing it for themselves for the first time but rather that the reporting of
new Effects that are recognized and shared by a large group of people has fallen dramatically in recent weeks.
What if I told you there might be a reason for that?
First, a little bit of context.
The last two reported Effects that seemed to affect a large number of people
and seemed to be new at the time to many of them from my perspective were "Shaggy's missing Adam's Apple" and "Kurt Cobain's missing feathefluffy jacket" both reported about two months ago.
Disclaimer: I am an acting moderator here on this subreddit and the opinions I am putting forward here in this theory are my own as a user and in no way reflect the opinions and positions of the moderation team. Now, the easy skeptical explanation would be that there are only so many things that can be easily confused or misremembered and that after several years of people reporting them, they have pretty much all been discovered, reported, theorized about, and elaborated on.
Those who know anything about my posting history are surely already aware that this is NOT the path I'm going to take with this.
I've been working on kind of a grand unification theory (like a lot of people) for an explanation for the Mandela Effect and this is just one facet of it and by no means a conclusion.
We are the unwitting participants in a long term study about the validity and usefulness of Memetic Engineering Ask yourself; when was the first time you heard the word
meme?
It's used all the time nowadays, but really... when did it become so commonplace?
The word was originally coined by author and famous Atheist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book
The Selfish Gene and spawned the study of
Memetics.
Basically, the idea is that a
meme acts like a gene and is passed on and propagated by like minded individuals and contributes to forming an inherent trait that can be passed on if it proves to be a successful adaptation.
Personally, I don't recall hearing the word much until the advent of Social Media and not really taking off till somewhere around 2010 or so - but that's just me. There was actually quite a bit of excitement about this idea in scientific circles even after Mr. Dawkins somewhat distanced himself from the notion in later works.
This really has a lot to do with the notion of
Social Engineering and the kinds of studies carried on by organizations like the
Tavistock Institute in my opinion
(a rabbit hole in itself). There is an
excellent article from 1996 in Wired Magazine that explains some of the ideas about what can be accomplished with Memetic Engineering - here is a brief excerpt:
The objectives of this research, breathtaking in their implications, were described by the investigators in Growing Artificial Societies: Social Science from the Bottom Up, a project monograph: The broad aim of this research is to begin the development of a more unified social science, one that embeds evolutionary processes in a computational environment that simulates demographics, the transmission of culture, conflict, economics, disease, the emergence of groups, and co-adaptation with the environment, all from the bottom up. Research initiatives like the 2050 Project hold out the prospect of such a new kind of social science, as well as the possibility of a new science of memetic engineering. While predictions about the pace of scientific innovation are notoriously risky, my guess is that by the beginning of the 21st century the embryonic field of computer-based memetic studies either will reveal itself as an intellectual dry hole or will prove to be a technology of extraordinary power. If the second scenario comes to pass, what are the long-term implications for our self-image as a species - endowed as we are with at least the illusion of free will and blessed, perhaps uniquely among the creatures of this earth, with the baffling gift of conscious thought?
First the dark scenario. Memes might come to be viewed explicitly as the primary actors in the drama of human history, exerting an iron-fisted control precisely analogous to that of Richard Dawkins's "selfish genes" in the pageant of biological evolution. This is the disquieting vision that Daniel Dennett proffered - the human mind as a mere meat computer, conscious human beings as puppets dancing to the blind watchmaker's hidden melodies. But is this a fair reading of the philosophical implications of memes? Perhaps not. If we consider the matter carefully, we can glimpse a subtler message lurking between the lines of this emerging discipline. It is the same message implicit in the new science of evolutionary psychology, articulated by Robert Wright in The Moral Animal: Understanding the often unconscious nature of genetic control is the first step toward understanding that we're all puppets, and our best hope for even partial liberation is to try to decipher the logic of the puppeteer.
What I am proposing is that this test has gone live and we may be unwitting participants in it. This is actually more probable than it may at first sound when you consider the sheer volume of "Terms and Conditions" that we all agree to every time we download a new App, update the operating systems of our electronic devices, join a Social Media platform, or partake in the Beta testing of software or a "free" game.
Facebook caught a lot of flak for treating users as human guinea pigs a few years back by trying to alter their moods with targeted news feeds and articles to track how their posting habits changed and affected others in their social media circle.
The truth is that this still goes on all the time and things like
Psychographics are used by advertisers and political activists to sway public opinion and manipulate the masses.
What I'm suggesting here though is a little bit different and was inspired by two events that are something of iconic moments in the history of Mandela Effect reporting:
- The Apollo 13 Flip-Flop
- Fiona Broom reporting that she had been approached by a group who told her to stop promoting/reporting the Mandela Effect phenomenon in around April of 2016
I am not really a follower or fan of Fiona Broom and really wish she could have come up with a better name than "Mandela Effect" but the fact that she was supposedly approached by people claiming that they were doing important research and asked her to lay off commenting about it is something that if true, is really interesting and ties in to the Apollo 13 flip-flop in a way that makes the whole thing make a little bit more rational sense.
For those who don't know, the
Apollo 13 flip-flop is where experiencers witness a clip from the movie where the line is said "had" instead of "have" and it then seems to magically change back to the iconic "Houston we have a problem".
What's the big deal? many may ask...
The big deal is that this has been witnessed by many people, myself included, and was extensively researched using all accessible media online at the time as well as supposedly on peoples' personal media/DVD's at home over the span of days to weeks.
Even more strange, people continue to have their own experiences with this at completely different times.
I had my experience somewhere around August of 2016 and can absolutely attest to the fact that
all available media online said the famous quote as "had" and that the camera angle in some of the clips was slightly different - I cannot vouch for the separate testimonies that claimed the movies users had at home changed since I obviously couldn't witness it for myself...but for the span of somewhere around a week or so
every clip that I brought up online to view had the alternate dialogue and when it changed back, they all did.
Occams Razor is overused in this forum sometimes but seems appropriate here:
If something supernatural is not the explanation, and the witnesses are of sound mind, really the only rational explanation is that the clips were deliberately changed and targeted to a specific group as part of some kind of test or research project. ...and if that's true, a likely reason behind it would be as part of the testing of Memetic Engineering techniques.
Are we just being used as human Guinea pigs in a long term test that is nearing completion?
Comments: **AllSeeingI33*: That's totally what's going on! it makes perfect sense - this is what they used to get Trump Elected and in the attempt to get him re-elected right?
I mean they used Steve Bannon and his experience from Cambridge Analytica to create the whole QAnon thing and then used this Memetic Engineering technique to steer the masses and get them riled up so that they would vote for him!
**Awesomo420:* I think I actually agree with you on this one...and that scares me
**NiQuil:* I love my President! and would vote for him a hundred times if I could. Y'all are just a bunch of Libtards!
**Awesomo420:* Of course you would you frickin' Nazi, I bet you're a "Proud Boy" too
**IAmBecky:* That would explain why he is so mean
**LeaveItToCleaver:* I see you guys didn't read the Rules.
**DaringDew:* Yes...I see
**MentalMagellan:* I think the OP missed the point about Occam's Razor.
This is obviously just coincidences and the human mind's desire to put things in order when they don't make sense - basically a way to rationalize the irrational when an obvious explanation proves elusive.
**Awesomo420:* I think this Post is Brilliant!
================================================================================= Edit: A major oversight on my part is that I neglected to mention not to use the
”u” in any of the comments referring to these fictional users just in case there is a real user out there with the same name - poor /NiQuil got a mysterious notification and realized he had become the topic of conversation over here quite by accident (sorry, thanks for being a good sport).
I’ll go back and add an asterisk and take away the slash in the fictional usernames so future comments don’t get us in trouble with real users.

https://optimaldfs.blogspot.com/2020/09/studs-duds-nfl-week-2-fantasy-football.html Every NFL week, we'll go game by game and name a Stud and a Dud for each contest. Studs and duds are relative to their consensus rankings and salaries on DraftKings and FanDuel. Meaning the Stud will not always be the player I expect to have the most fantasy points for a given game and the Dud will not always be a player I expect to get zero snaps.
Editor's Note: Optimal DFS is the #1 app for building fantasy lineups for DraftKings and FanDuel in Apple's App Store. Download Optimal DFS in the App Store to build customized optimized lineups and get breaking news before everyone else in your league. Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns
Stud: Joe Mixon
The usage was there for Joe Mixon in Week 1. 19 rush attempts and 2 targets. Unfortunately for him, the game script was garbage. That will not be the case in Cleveland. I see them moving the ball down the field on the back of Mixon Week 2. He also has Joe Burrow who looked impressive for a rookie QB with no preseason action.
Dud: Odell Beckham, Jr.
There is still time to fade OBJ and be contrarian. People are going to look at his 10 targets from Week 1 and see potential, but it will end in frustration. There is zero chemistry between Baker and Beckham. I'm avoiding him in Week 2 even with his embarrassingly low salary on DK and FD.
New York Giants at Chicago Bears
Stud: Allen Robinson
Mitchell Trubisky attempted 36 passes and targeted 11 different receivers in Week 1. Allen Robinson scooped up 9 of those targets for 5 receptions and 74 yards. He's the best offensive talent the Bears have and I'm expecting more looks to go his way Week 2. I'll be surprised if he doesn't score a TD against the Giants.
Dud: Saquon Barkley
Saquan Barkley is an incredible talent, but he has not been living up to expectations. In Week 1 against the Steelers, he started the game with 8 rushes for -8 yards. 8 rushes for -8 yards. Figured I'd write it a 2nd time to let it sink because I had to check multiple sources to confirm that stat. He's really good, but his consensus ranking is higher than his production. The Giants offensive line needs help.
Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys
Stud: Calvin Ridley
Which Atlanta Falcon WR had 9 receptions on 12 targets in Week 1? All of them, essentially... Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, and Russell Gage all had 9 receptions and 12 targets! However, Ridley was the only player to score a TD and did so twice. There is potential in this game for another shootout. I'm a big fan of Ridley season long and love him Week 2.
Dud: Russell Gage
Yes, Gage is coming off a 12 tgt / 9 rec / 114 yrd showing. Although I think we're going to see another shootout here for the Falcons, I'm selling that he sees the same volume Week 2.
Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers
Stud: Davante Adams
Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams tore up the Minnesota Vikings defense. An absolute monster game for Adams tallying up 17 targets, 14 receptions, 156 yards, and 2 TDs. Aaron Rodgers looked as crisp as ever and Davante Adams will continue to benefit.
Dud: TJ Hockenson
I had high hopes for TJ Hockenson Week 1. Especially with Kenny Golladay out. 5 target, 5 receptions, 56 yards, and 1 TD. It's a good game on paper, but it felt to me like this was TJ's ceiling. I worry he's shaping up to be a touchdown-dependent TE start week in and week out. The targets went to the WRs Quintez Cephus (10), Marvin Jones Jr. (8), and Danny Amendola (7).
Minnesota Vikings at Indianapolis Colts
Stud: Jonathan Taylor
I was a seller on Jonathan Taylor coming into Week 1. I wasn't buying that he won the starting job from Marlon Mack, which did appear to be the case. Now that Mack is out with a torn Achilles, the backfield will be in the hands of Nyheim Hines and Jonathan Taylor. Hines made the noise with 2 TDs, but they both got a lot of play. 9 carries and 6 targets for Jonathan Taylor and 7 carries and 8 targets for Nyheim Hines. I like both of them, but coming into Week 2 I like Taylor as the higher value play. Phil Rivers is truly proving to be Captain Dump-off. Bold prediction: Nyheim Hines and Jonathan Taylor can turn out to be this year's Austin Ekeler and Melvin Gordon.
Dud: TY Hilton
The targets were there for TY Hilton, but he didn't do much with them. 9 targets, 4 receptions, and 53 yards for TY. I'm staying away from him until I see a little bit of chemistry with Captain Dump-off.
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins
Stud: John Brown
John Brown is always overlooked and consistently produces. The new addition of Stefon Diggs to the receiving core added to the low valuation of John Brown. I see Diggs and Brown as 1A and 1B options for Josh Allen. 10 targets, 6 receptions, 70 yards, and 1 TD for John Brown in Week 1. He was wide open for a 2nd TD, but Josh Allen spazzed and could not hit him. Josh Allen did look good outside of that 1 pass and both fumbles.
Dud: Ryan Fitzpatrick
0 TDs and 3 INTs for Fitzmagic in Week 1 against the Patriots. The Pats are the Pats, but the Bills defense is pretty good too. A hammy issue for DeVante Parker isn't helping his cause. I'm waiting for the "Tuaaaaaa" chants before I take a chance on Fitz. He's always good to muddy the waters with a good game as soon as he's counted out.
San Francisco 49ers at New York Jets
Stud: Raheem Mostert
He's the best talent in the 49ers backfield and it's NOT EVEN CLOSE. The 49ers rode him through the playoffs and will continue to do so this season. He has the possibility for multi-touchdown 150+ all-purpose yardage week in and week out.
Dud: Jimmy Garoppolo
I like Jimmy G in general, but I think the 49ers run away with this one and don't have a need to pass the rock. He'll have to get his in during the 1st half if he wants to have any fantasy value.
Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles
Stud: Jared Goff
This one is going to be a beat down and Jared Goff is going to be the benefactor. I see him spreading the football around and tallying up 3+ TD. Dwayne Haskins Jr. had what I consider to be a good game last week against the Eagles (for him). A win and 0 INT. This should be a piece of cake for the Rams and Goff.
Dud: Carson Wentz
The Los Angeles Rams just held Dak Prescott in check. This isn't going to go well for Carson Wentz. He's coming off of a 2 pick game against the Washington Football Team. The jury is still out if Washington's DEF is good or if the Eagles offense made them look good. Week 2 should shed some light on the answer.
Denver Broncos at Pittsburgh Steelers
Stud: Ben Roethlisberger
Big Ben was doing Big Ben things on MNF. He looks fully recovered from his surgery and has a lot of weapons to throw to. JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Chase Claypool, Eric Ebron, Vance McDonald, and Diontae Johnson. Good luck picking the WRs/TEs that will hit... Put Roethlisberger in your Week 2 lineup with confidence.
Dud: James Conner
I liked James Conner coming into the season and tried to steal him (unsuccessfully) in my draft. Turns out I'm happy I didn't get him. He looks stuck in the mud and now has an ankle injury he's nursing. Benny Snell looks Jr. spry. I'd think twice about firing him up in your Week 2 lineups against the Broncos if he gets clearance to play on the ankle.
Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Stud: Christian McCaffrey
Alvin Kamara just ripped the Bucs for 2 TDs (should've been 3) in Week 1. Christian McCaffrey is prime for a monster game here. Anything less than triple-digit yardage and multiple TDs is a letdown.
Dud: Rob Gronkowski
This is a crowded receiving core in Tampa Bay. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Scotty Miller, OJ Howard, Cameron Brate, and Rob Gronkowski. The chemistry between Brady and Gronk I'm sure is still there, but OJ Howard is the youngefresher talent. I liked him to lead Buc's TEs season long before Week 1. Week 1 that proved to be the case and I think the pattern continues.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Tennessee Titans
Stud: Derrick Henry
He's unstoppable and Vrabel knows how to use him. The Titans are going to control this game on the ground. No TDs Week 1 was disappointing, but he'll get in the endzone in Week 2.
Dud: Gardner Minshew II
I caught a case of Minshew Mania, so it pains me to mark him as a Dud, but it's going to be extremely difficult to maintain his Week 1 efficiency. 19 completions on 20 attempts with 3 TDs and 0 INTs. With little help in the backfield, Minshew will most likely struggle to move the ball Week 2 against the Titans defense.
Washington Football Team at Arizona Cardinals
Stud: Washington DEF
I'm a buyer of this Washington defense. Chase Young came out of the gates hot Week 1 and lead The Football Team to a big win. I'm not expecting Washington to shut down the Cardinals, but I am expecting them to keep this game close and cover the 6.5 point Vegas spread.
Dud: Antonio Gibson
Later this season Antonio Gibson will be the guy, but Washington isn't ready to give him that role yet. I fired up Antonio Gibson Week 1 in my 14-team season-long league after Miles Sanders was ruled out. It started off promising as he was getting the early work. Then after 1 goalline series, it all went downhill. Gibson got stuffed on the 1st goalline carry. In came Peyton Barber who eventually pooonded it in. Barber finished with 2 TDs and appeared to the main RB for the latter half of the game. Barber is the safer play heading into Week 2.
Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans
Stud: Marquise Brown
This game will be a little more competitive for the Baltimore Ravens compared to their Week 1 beatdown on the miz Cleveland Browns. Lamar Jackson only had to throw the ball 25 times, but Hollywood Brown was still able to tally 6 targets, 5 receptions, and 101 yards. Mark Andrews and Willie Snead took the 3 TDs thrown. I'm expecting a big week from Brown here in Week 2.
Dud: JK Dobbins
A lot of excitement after Week 1 for season-long JK Dobbins. Yours truly is a Dobbins owner. Unfortunately for me, I only felt pain Week 1 because I am also a Mark Ingram owner and had Ingram locked in as the starter. 4 total TDs vultured from my Week 1 starters Mark Ingram and Antonio Gibson. Dobbins is the future for the Ravens, but I think his 2 TDs were flukey in this blowout game. When push comes to shove I'm betting on Ingram over Dobbins and will keep Ingram in my Week 2 lineup.
Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers
Stud: Clyde Edwards-Helaire
CEH is a lethal weapon for the Chiefs and they know it. He put up big fantasy points in the opener without catching a pass and while getting stopped multiple times on the goalline. I'm not worried about his goalline abilities. Week 2 he'll continue to smash. It'll be tough to compete with McCaffrey season-long, but I can see CEH as the #2 overall RB when it's all said and done.
Dud: Austin Ekeler
The fantasy world is panicking about Austin Ekeler's usage in the passing game Week 1. He only saw a single target. He did have a respectable game on the ground picking up 84 yards on 19 carries. I am indeed pressing the panic button as well. Austin Ekeler is not a ground and pound RB. He's a scatback and Captain Dump-off is no longer in town. Maybe things change when Justin Herbert inevitably takes control. We're looking at a lot of 3 and outs with Tyrod trying to force the ball down the field as the Chargers play from behind in this one.
New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks
Stud: Julian Edelman
Cam Newton only threw 19 passes Week 1. Julian Edelman was targeted on 37% of those pass attempts and put together an OK game in PPR. He was also used once on a successful end-around. The game script Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks will be different and the Patriots will need to pass to keep up.
Dud: Sony Michel
(See thoughts above on Julian Edelman). The Patriots came in against the Dolphins wanting to pooond the rock. And Sony Michel was still lackluster. He had a fantasy saving TD, but only registered 10 carries for 37 yards. This is a low-floor low-ceiling touchdown-dependent situation for Michel.
New Orleans Saints at Las Vegas Raiders
Stud: Latavius Murray
Alvin Kamara stole all the TDs, but Latavius Murray lead the team in carries Week 1. 15 carries for Murray compared to 12 for Kamara. The game script here calls for a Saints blowout. I'm expecting Latavius Murray to put the finishing touches on this one with a lot of pooonding the rock in the 2nd half.
Dud: Josh Jacobs
Josh Jacobs is no dud, but his Week 1 numbers are going to be hard to replicate. Especially against a New Orleans Saints team that held the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to under 100 yards rushing and only 1 rushing TD (Tom Brady). I see the Raiders playing from behind in this one making it difficult for Jacobs to perform for fantasy purposes.

Note: don't try this, it
probably won't turn out well for you.
I spent about 6 months grinding up a $5,000 bankroll playing home/casino games ranging from .5/1 to 1/3. The week that I hit that $5,000 mark, Matt, one of my best friends from college informed me that his job had placed him in Las Vegas for the next month and that I could crash with him for a few nights if I wanted to come on out west. I had frequent flyer miles for the flight and some Mlife/Fremont hotel comps for the rest of the trip. My grand total for flight and lodging for 10 days came to $200.
Now, I’m not going to bore you guys with low-level cash hand histories. The next 10 days were filled with me playing lowstakes poker for 10-12 hours a day. It’s as fun as it sounds – it’s not. I was having a good time in Vegas otherwise – but towards the end of the trip I had a realization: 1/2’s the same everywhere. I didn’t have to fly out to the desert to raise to $7 preflop.
After 10 days, my grand total from poker (and a fair amount of dumb degenerate shit on Fremont) was -$186. That wasn’t what I came out to do — I knew that I was a better player than my recent results had indicated. The morning of my return flight, I decided I was going to play tournaments until I either busted my $5,000 bankroll or hit something worthwhile.
I impulsively decided to not get on my plane at 11:30am. Checkout time from Luxor was at 11:00 – and I didn’t know where I was going yet. I had 30 minutes to pack up my stuff and figure out where I was going before they’d charge me a fee. I sorted TripAdvisor by cheapest first – I’ve stayed in crappy hostels/motels before and overall am a very low maintenance person. I figured that by staying somewhere for $20 a night, I’d be able to maximize the amount of shots I could take before flying back home. I accepted that there was a real chance I’d go back broke – but I didn’t really care. If I didn’t take my shot now, then when?
I booked the cheapest bed in Vegas - a 6-person shared hostel just past the Stratosphere. Let's just say you get what you pay for — it was not a happy place. A fair amount of the people in there were bordering on homelessness and there was barbed wire surrounding their outdoor gym. In addition to this, I had the constant stress of knowing that all that separated my bankroll from the rest of my roommates was a tiny lock. I took the Deuce to the strip, lived off food comps, and turned down invites from my friends to hang out. I was in town to play poker, nothing else.
Disclaimer: I had never played tournaments prior to heading out to Vegas. My only knowledge of hand ranges was from watching televised events. I downloaded a free Nash chart app on my phone while on the Deuce to the strip and studied it for 5 minutes – whatever, I get the jist of it. Let’s play some cards.
The first day of doing this I played the $140 daily at the Aria. Top 13 spots paid -- I finished in 15th. It was depressing to say the least — I felt as if I was at rock bottom. Before the first night of sleeping at the hostel I called the airline to see if I could get on the flight that I had deliberately missed the day prior. I couldn't.
I made it my goal to at least cash something so that I could get a decent hotel room.
I couldn’t have slept more than 2-3 hours the first night there. One of my roommates was loudly vomiting all night, the sheets itched, and I was going through an existential crisis... like dude, you’ve got a finance degree and you’re really doing this shit?
While on the bus to the strip, I opened Poker Atlas and saw that there was a $200 satellite to win a seat into the $1,600 Venetian main event. I decided that I was going to go take a shot at that.
I was at risk twice in the satellite but after studying the GTO method on how to win coinflips, I persevered and won a seat to the main.
The first day was surreal – once again, I was running on minimal sleep due to my housing arrangements, but I remember the following hands from day 1:
- Button opens to 2.2x, I’m in the BB with Q9cc. SB folds, we go HU to a flop of 832c. He c-bets, I call. Turn 4x, x/x. River Ax. I check, he bets, I x/r to like 3x his bet, he insta folds. I take it down and show air.
- UTG+1 opens, MP calls, I flat on the button with K10ss. 3 ways to a flop of Qs43xx. UTG+1 bets 40% pot, MP calls, I call. Turn is the Js. UTG+1 bets 60% pot, MP calls, I flat. River comes the 8s. UTG+1 snap bets 80%. MP flats, I flat. I announce king high flush, they both muck.
- Folds to the SB, he limps, I look down at Q10o, and check. Flop comes KQ6r. He leads 35%, I call. Turn 10. He bets, I call. River comes a J. He bets, I tank for about 45 seconds then flick in a call, he shows 76o… ship it.
The average stack after day 1 was around 40k, I bagged like 65k. I walked back to the Deuce stop outside of the Venetian and headed on my 30 minute ride back home. I kept thinking to myself, someone’s gotta win this thing, why not me?
I had to get in the money for this tournament to be able to get the fuck out of there. A min cash here was over $3k – that was more than enough for me to get a suite on Fremont for a few nights and party for a bit, then get home with my head held high.
Day 2: I get up at 7am after already being completely awake for the past 4 hours. There’s no way I slept more than 3 hours last night. I hit the Denny’s by the Stratosphere then get on the Deuce.
I get to the Venetian and feel like I’m about to fall asleep. I go to the self-serve coffee/tea dispenser in the middle of the room and make myself an iced coffee. I get to my table, and the cocktail waitress comes around. I ask for another iced coffee and toss her a fiver.
Here are some highlights from the 1st half of day 2:
- I open 97ss on the button, BB flats. Flop comes AK3s. BB checks, I bet 35%. He throws out a 5k chip – which I interpret as a x/r to my bet. I groan, make a joke about it being the first hand of the day, and start to muck. The dealer stops my cards midway before hitting the muck, and informs me that he didn’t raise, that he called my flop bet. Everyone laughs, I go silent and wait for him to make change. Turn is the 2s. He thinks for a second and bets 30%. I tank for like 30 seconds, then flat. River is a blank. He thinks for a second, then checks. I bet like 30% pot. He tells me that I’m an angle shooter and mucks. I tell him I’m not an angle shooter and show my 9 high. Everyone laughs, we get on with playing.
- CO opens, I 3b 87dd in the SB to 4x, he flats. Flop comes 1032d. I check, he checks. Turn is the 6d. I bet 55% pot, he flats. River comes the Kd. I bet 60%, he tanks, tells me he thinks I backdoored diamonds, then folds. Damn, these players are pretty good.
- I open KK UTG to 2.5x, UTG +1 flats. Heads up to a flop of K43r. x/x. Turn 8, I bet 40% pot, he calls. River 3, I bet 80% pot, he tanks, then calls with AK.
I bring my 3 racks of chips to the new table and immediately get some comments – whatever, I’m just on a heater, it happens. At this point, my body was giving out. I was trying my hardest not to fall asleep in between every hand.
Cutoff opens, I’m in the SB, I look down at KK. I put in the 3b, folds back to him. He puts in a healthy 4. We’re the two big stacks at the table – I’d guess he was 50bb effective while I was around 65bb. God damn, am I good enough to fold kings here? No, I’m not. I shove, he snaps, I know that I’ve just fucked up my tournament. He shows the aces. The dealer puts a king in the window, and I hold. I’m for sure the chip leader now.
I lose a few 40/60 and 60/40 flips and chip down a bit. I still have a very healthy stack, probably around 80bb.
The next 3 hands are from the second half of day 2:
- Aggro Asian guy on the button. Folds to him, he opens to 2.2x, SB folds, I look down at 43ss and raise to 7.5x, he flats.
Flop comes 894cc. I check, he bets, I call. Turn’s another 9. I check, he bets 75% pot, I call. River’s the 10c. I check, he bets 1.2x pot. I ask the dealer for a count of the bet – meanwhile, villain looks like he’s going to shit himself. I flick in a chip, he throws down KcQx. I laugh a little, show my 43ss, and obnoxiously say ship it.
- I open KQo UTG+1, MP 3bets me. I figure that a 4b from UTG+1 could take it down a fair amount of the time, so I decide to go for it. He thinks for a second and flats.
Flop comes AK4r. I check, he checks back. Turn is a 6, goes x/x again. River’s another brick. I put in a 30% value bet. He does a little grimace and tanks for like 20 seconds. It looks like he’s going to fold so I start verbally telling him that his queens are good. The dealer informs me that you’re not allowed to talk about your hand to another player. I inform him that I’m not talking about my hand, I’m talking about villains’ hand. Dealer laughs and lets me continue to antagonize villain. MP starts talking back, asking if I’m really bluffing. I inform him that once he folds, I’ll show the bluff. He ends up calling, I snap show, he pays me then gets up from the table to go for a walk.
- We’re playing 6 handed. UTG opens, MP flats, I flat TT on the button. 3 ways to a flop of AT9ccc. UTG bets 50% pot, MP folds, I put in a medium sized raise. He thinks about it and flats.
The turn is the Kd. He pauses for a second then checks. I figured AxKc was his most likely combo. I didn’t think he could fold AxKc to any sizing – I decide to overbet jam 2x pot. He tanks for like 5 min and eventually lets it go. He tells me later he folded AxKc. Nice fold sir.
I finished day two 2nd in chips out of the 64 players remaining. More importantly, I was in the money. My friend Matt offered to give me a ride to the hostel to grab my stuff.
On the way to the hostel I’m telling Matt how trash the place is and he’s kind of like yeah man, whatever, it can’t be that bad. We gather my belongings and head on out. Matt remarked to me that the hostel reminded him of jail mixed with a summer camp.
I open a same night hotel app and see a room at the Four Queens available for $110. The lady at check in was nice enough – however, she informed me that the only room they had available at my price point was a smoking room overlooking the Fremont St. experience. I paid the $20 to upgrade to a non-smoking in the quiet part of the hotel. Vegas man, I swear.
It’s like 2am at this point -- I get to my room, sit on the bed and close my eyes. I open them and it’s 11:00am. Ah fuck man, I gotta get to the Venetian. I hop in the shower, brush my teeth, and freshen up. Even if I don’t have clean clothes, whatever, I’m second in the main, who cares.
Some interesting hands from the first part of Day 3:
- I had two inexcusable punts in this tournament. This is the first one: I open 5h5c from LP, BB calls. Flop comes J62hhh. x/x. Turn is a 4x. x, I bet 50% pot, BB jams 15bb. I called – and immediately realized I fucked up, big time. He had 2 big chips in his stack that I didn’t see, making his shove effectively like 25bb. In addition, I didn’t have the 5h, I had the 5d. I really didn’t ask for a count or double check my hole cards. Villain turns over 64o and holds. In my defense, I literally didn’t know what ICM meant at the time. Whoops.
- Someone who I recognize from poker TV jams 22bb UTG. I’m in the CO with JJ, I ask him how much it is, he’s talkative and seems genuinely comfortable/down for me to call. I fold – I run into him a few days later at the Aria, he tells me he had AA there. I believe him.
- CO opens, button instantly jams 30bb effective. I’m in the SB with TT and 25bb – live reads, we’re flipping. I call for all in my effective stack, CO folds, button has AQ. I hold. He’s not happy I called with tens. Oh well, sorry bro, gg.
- MP opens, CO 3 bets to 7bb, button jams 20bb. I look down at 2 black aces in the big blind. I reshove, MP folds, CO calls off his 20bb stack. I’m up against AQ and QQ. I hold.
Even with my atrocious punt earlier in the day, I’m the chip leader again.
We’re down to about 15 left in the field. UTG opens, I 3b AKo on the button, he jams 20bb, I call. He has 99, a king comes on the flop and he’s gone.
It’s day 3 of the main and we’re playing 5 handed with 12 people left. Let’s fucking go.
- Button opens to 2.5x, I’m in the BB with A8dd, I flat. Flop comes A104r, I check, he bets, I call. Turn is a 7, x/x. River A, I bet 1.2x pot. He tanks, calls, I show, I’m good.
- CO opens to 2.5x, I’m in the BB with 108dd, I flat. Flop comes Kd4x2d, it goes x/x. Turn is a Kx, I check, he bets 60% pot, I flat. River is the 4d. I check, he bets pot. I tank and let it go. He tells me later he checked back a weak king on the flop.
- SB completes, I’m in the BB with J9o and I check my option. Flop comes Q108r. The SB donks out into me for 60% pot. I flat. Turn comes a brick and he leads into me for 60% again. I raise to 3.5x his turn bet, he thinks for a while then flats. River is another brick. He bets 80% pot into me. I tank for a while, then shove. He starts laughing and folds QQ face up.
Less than a week ago I was grinding buffet comps at Planet Hollywood. Now I have guys correctly folding top set to me.
I’ve made it to the final table. I pick up a few small pots and the two shortstacks at the table get eliminated in quick succession.
This is without a doubt the most pointless and just plain out stupid punt of my entire life: I open J2dd on the button into a ~18bb SB and a GTO robot with mid 7 figures in career earnings in the BB. Don’t do this, this is quite literally lighting money on fire. SB folds, BB flats. Flop comes Kh8h3d. I cbet, BB calls. Turn is the Kd, goes x/x.
River comes a 7h, he leads into me for half pot. Whatever, I’m going for it – I put in a raise. He thinks for all of 5 seconds then calls me with KQh. Wow, I just punted away $50,000 in ICM. Jesus Christ dude, what the fuck.
For the next orbit or two, I’m clearly pissed at myself. I get up after my button and do a lap around the poker room – I’m good. The monkey tilt is gone, and I’m ready to get back to playing normal ranges.
Anyway, nothing else really happens for a while – I look down at AKo UTG and raise it up. Folds around to the BB, he thinks for a while, then jams for about 20bb. I snap, he has AQo. I hold. I’m now second in chips. We go on a 10-minute break.
When I get back to the table, the prospect of a 5-way chop comes up. We’re all tired – and the pay jumps are very significant. If you couldn’t tell from this story, I’m a degenerate, but in this spot, I’m willing to reduce variance a bit. We run the numbers and come to an agreement – we all agree to take a very slight ICM bump to give 1st place a bit more money than his stack is worth.
I just won $129,000 -- huh? This was my second tournament cash – not too bad considering that it was my third tournament ever. Maybe I should start learning how to play MTT’s now.
I take $124,000 in a check and $5,000 in cash. I’m leaving Vegas in 4 days and don’t plan on coming home with any of the cash.
The winner of the tournament’s a pretty cool guy and he asks if I want to crash in his guest room tonight… like yeah, if that’s a real offer, I’m down. I pick up my toiletry bag from the Venetian concierge and we hit the Uber.
The next morning Matt picks me up at his house – I hit the Chase bank and deposit the $124,000. I take Matt and my other friend, Spencer out to the Sterling Brunch over at Bally’s – the entire time, Spencer just kept repeating “Davis, what the fuck”. I don’t know dude, seriously, what the fuck.
I get a suite at the D downtown that night and (very) long story short I end up hitting $100 on a number at roulette at 5am. It’s time for bed.
Here’s a link to my Hendon Mob, verifying my tournament result. Hopefully I see some of you guys at the WSOP in 2021.
