Episode 62- Chille Tid
Steven and the Crystal Gems try to relax with a slumber party. Written and Storyboarded by Lamar Abrams and Lauren Zuke - I don’t recognize this writer. I wonder if this is the new writer pairing, or if this is a one-off.
- “What’s the matter, Pierogi? You tired?” Uh...why is Amethyst drowing Steven?
- “I don’t get tired, I get results.” I know that feeling, Pearl.
- “Was the sign for,’pull me up’, one wiggle or two?”
- The flashlight returns?! My life is complete.
- So, we’re looking for ArmsLegs, huh?
- Also, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t on before, and I didn’t hear any cues that suggested that it was being turned on, so it was a little jarring to just have it be there.
- “This is why we wear lifejackets.”
- I love this man.
- “It feels like we’ve been searching for lightyears!” “Uh, lightyears measures light, not years.” Uh...that doesn’t really make any sense. That’s like saying ‘Mph’s measure cars”. It doesn’t measure the object that travels, it measures the distance the object travels.
- What a treasure trove this episode is turning out to be.
- “Safety’s no punchline, Pearl.” Yeah, Steven! Lay it down!
- “Is Lapis gonna be okay?” Yes, I also have this question.
- “Don’t worry, Lapis. We won’t let you sleep with the fishes.” Ha! It’s a double pun! Fishes because water, and sleep because they’re tired! Genius!
- “I win.”
- “We should be out there searching, not in here not searching!”
- Wait, why are they tired? They don’t sleep, right?
- “Maybe we can throw a little fun into the mix with a slumber party!” Oh, okay. It’s going to be one of those episodes, is it?
- “It’ll be like there isn’t a vengeful fusion boiling the ocean with hatred!”
- What’s that, Chekhov? You think that this episode is a rest from the action for both the gems and the audience? I dunno, seems unlikely.
- So we have a slumber party with Steven, Pearl and Amethyst. This sounds absolutely wonderful.
- “I’ll pass on the SlumberPals.”
- Pearl doesn’t know how to sleep? That’s actually amazing.
- “Okay. Alright. I’m sleeping now. I’m sleeping.”
- Woah, what is this? Are we getting some exciting Steven dreams?
- “Steven Universe is filmed before a live studio audience!”
- Wait a second, Pearl doesn’t have her gem! Is Steven dreaming about a human Pearl?
- This is everything I ever wanted in my life!
- Just look at her. She’s amazing. This is amazing.
- “Bunga-Kowa!”
- The laugh track in the back is making this approximately 10 times more amazing.
- Oh my god, they all cheer when they see Garnet. Seriously, whoever came up with this idea deserves a raise.
- “Chille Tid!” I don’t actually know what this means, but same.
- He’s going to The Big Dance? But the prom’s tomorrow!
- Wait, shit, I already used that joke. Just pretend like you haven’t seen it before, okay?
- ‘Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” q:^)
- Oh no… This isn’t going to be a silly, fun episode, is it?
- Man, this is a pretty eerie image, actually.
- Something interesting that I just noticed. Before, Lapis’ hair went forwards, but here it’s actually going out to the sides, like ArmsLegs’ hair.
- Okay, this is really creepy stuff. I like that Steven immediately realizes that this isn’t normal, too. I feel like a lot of shows would have ran with Steven thinking that it was a dream for some time, but it feels like he knows right away that something’s up.
- Pearl interrupts the dream? Unlucky.
- Oh, I just realized, Pearl was actually just watching Steven sleep, wasn’t she?
- “Well that doesn’t make any sense. Lapis is fused with Jasper at the bottom of the ocean.”
- I quite like the idea that Pearl’s never slept before in her life. It’s always wonderful, watching Steven introduce her to aspects of human life.
- I wish I could remember my dreams like Steven. I forget almost all of my dreams when I wake up, and even the ones I remember are more bits of visuals or emotions than anything solid.
- ”Why did I agree to raise this smol child?”
- Is our boy Dogcopter going to enlighten us on the sociopolitical climate of cartoons in the United States?
- Or he could meow. That’s a fair point.
- “I hope the rumors about Dogcopter in the tabloids aren’t true.” I just avoid learning anything about celebrities for this very reason. It’s one of the reasons I don’t look up any musicians that I like. Also, I don’t like knowing what a musician looks like. Does anyone else feel that way?
- Steven should realize that this is a dream right away. There’s no way Pearl would eat anything.
- Pearl gave Steven a rocket boost? Nice and spicy.
- By the ways, I am looking very intently for any subtle hints or metaphors we might get in this dream, but I don’t think I’ve found anything really substantial yet.
- I like how this looks. Maybe I’m just a sucker for a single color dominating most of the screen, but it just looks fantastic. It’s very clean looking, I think.
- By the ways, have yinz seen the behind the scenes video for Samurai Jack? I’m very excited for it now.
- Lapis! Like, the actual Lapis? It seems like it, but what does that mean? How is Steven able to communicate with her?
- Ew, what the hell is this?
- We got interrupted again? We had better not get left on a cliffhanger.
- Her dream gets displayed through per gem? And she’s dreaming about being with Rose? That’s cute. Also pretty sad.
- Rose’s Theme is playing in the background?
- Hey, at least it’s not Uncle Grandpa.
- I love the unearthly sound that comes from his mouth as this happens.
- I like that Pearl immediately realizes that Steven’s serious and stops to listen to him. We’re seeing Steven mature, and the people around him are starting to respect him in a more adult way.
- “Steven, you could be using your dreams to connect with her mentally.” How, though? What allows him to do this?
- “Maybe Lapis can just tell you where they are.” Hm… I don’t think she will. Remember that whole ‘You’re going to be my prisoner forever’ thing?
- “Oh! I know this is a dream, now.” Okay, so we’re lucid dreaming now. Will this impact how Steven can interact with Lapis?
- “I can imagine anything I want, like...a mashed potato.” Is not potato but is actually in fact fish “Hrm…”
- That is not Lion Steven that is clearly ArmsLegs!
- This is very interesting, visualy. Lapis said that Jasper would be her prisoner, but it looks more like she’s being held here than anything else.
- Woah, that’s cool. She’s holding them down with the weight of the entire ocean? How strong is ArmsLegs then? Jesus!
- Woah, this is absolutely awesome looking! So they’re each fighting to be in control, and only one of them can be on top at any one time? What a fascinating relationship they have with each other.
- ”You…”
- I’m not going to lie, I leaned away from my monitor when she said that.
- Man, this whole scene is really well done. This music is pretty fantastic, too. It actually kind of reminds me a little of Cell’s Theme, but with less of an emphasis on being badass and more on creepy horror.
- Man, what a beautiful shot. Seriously, show someone Gem Glow and then show them this image, and I doubt that they’d even realize it’s the same show.
- “Don’t look for me. I don’t want your help!” Yikes. Lapis clearly needs help, but she’s so stuck in this weird power struggle mentality that she doesn’t want it at all.
- “Just let me do this for you!” Seriously, what is it with the Lapis-Pearl similarities? We keep seeing them share lines and delivery over and over again. There’s got to be a reason for it.
- “We’re Malachite now.” Malachite? What a cool fucking name! It’s just got a great ring to it.
- Oh, I see, they modeled their...mindscape place...after the actual gemstone.
- Wow, what a terrifying shot. Something about the emotions on Malachite’s face really interest me, though. There’s confusion, surprise, and some subdued anger.
- Aw…
- “Amethyst was on a skateboard, and then Dogcopter meowed at, and then was just not interested in what I had to say at all, and I might have some issues I need to work out, but Lapis! She’s out there and she’s still-” “Sh...I know you’re worried, but there’s nothing we can do right now, so let’s take it easy.
- “That’s pretty convincing.”
Closing Thoughts-
This was a really great episode. First off, learning Malachite’s name was really cool, and the way we learned it was even better. Everything in that scene was pretty amazing. The animation was especially fantastic there, I think. The way Lapis and Jasper looked absolutely exhausted and defeated was really great, and their expressive emotions were really well animated. Most of the early stuff was really fun, especially anything with Pearl, and so hitting the dark stuff with Lapis was really unexpected and carried a lot of weight. I thought this would be a lighter episode, but it turns out that there’s no such thing in Steven Universe! I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes, so let’s get into the next episode.
Episode 63- Cry For Help
Steven's favorite TV show gets interrupted by a magical disturbance. Written and Storyboarded by Joe Johnston and Jeff Liu - A Jeff-Joe episode?
- Oh, dear. Is this the much-lauded Crying Breakfast Friends?
- “I don’t get this cartoon, man.” Me neither, Amethyst. Me neither.
- Wait, so what’s up with the TV? Why’s it going haywire?
- Oh, I was not expecting that. So Peridot hijacked television stations? What for?
- Oh, okay. She’s broadcasting on all frequencies, so the TV picking it up was unintentional. I guess we know where the ‘Cry For Help’ comes from.
- Show this imagine to someone who hasn’t seen Steven Universe and ask them what they think.
- This looks familiar…
- Oh! This is the place that Sugilite destroyed.
- “You guys should form Sugilite!” Maybe not the best idea, considering what happened last time. Still, Amethyst and Garnet are pretty different now, so maybe it wouldn’t be too bad.
- Nevermind, I guess they’re not going with Sugilite. I don’t think Opal would be equipped to handle this, and the gems on their own wouldn’t, so either the tower doesn’t get destroyed right away, or we finally get to see Garnet and Pearl fuse.
- I love when we see Garnet’s eyes.
- Look at how tiny she looks!
- “let’s fuse.”
- “Don’t cry, Pearl.”
- This is so interesting. Why did Amethyst and Pearl both react so strongly to fusing with Garnet? Is there something special about it? Maybe it’s because Garnet’s already a fusion. You’d think they would have a similar reaction when they formed Alexandrite, though, if that was the case.
- “Hang on. It’s been such a long time.” Man, they keep getting more and more direct with the sexuality involved in fusion. I love it!
- Wow, that’s really sensual. I don’t think I could imagine seeing something like this in a children’s cartoon 5 years ago.
- Then again, five years ago I was a snotty little brat who probably thought that I was too cool for cartoons. I don’t think there was much good on at the time, though.
- Man, I am loving this fusion dance a ton. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen one, and this one is really enjoyable to watch. I’m also very excited to see what exactly comes out of this fusion, though, so there might be a little bias there.
- Wait, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed this before, but their gems glow when they do fusion dances!
- This is so fucking radical!
- I’m dead.
- Oh wow, this is very cool looking. I really like her color scheme a ton.
- “This is the lovely Sardonyx coming to you live from the soon to be former communication hub. How are y’all doing tonight?” Interesting! She’s got a performance theme. I really was not expecting something like this. It’s really creative, and I don’t think I could have guessed anything like it at all.
- Also, I’ve noticed that I’ve slowly gotten used to the enormous amounts of hype this show gives me for fusions. Just so you know, I’m crazy excited, but I don’t think it would be very interesting to hear me say the same thing every time we saw a new fusion or character, so I try to tone it down a bit and keep to a discussionary tone.
- “Oh my stars, if it isn’t Steven Universe!” Man, Sardonyx really seems like that one cool aunt that loves hanging out with all of her nieces and nephews.
- I googled ‘Sardonyx’ to find out what the stone looked like and found this instead. Thank god Google’s got itself straight, right?
- “So, whaddya think? Was I worth the wait?” Wow. Sneaky, Crewniverse. Yes, Sardonyx, you were worth the wait.
- “What am I saying? Of course I was! Ahahahaha!”
- “I could literally squish you right now. It would not be hard!”
- “I haven’t exactly been myself lately.”
- I’ve been narrowing down exactly what I’m getting from Sardonyx, and it feels like she’s a performer or magican from Las Vegas. I could see her cohosting Penn and Teller easily.
- Interesting that Amethyst feels so down about this whole situation. I can really understand it, though. Garnet basically told Amethyst that she was the reason Sugilite failed, since Sardonyx is so ‘perfect’. I’m thinking that Cry For Help is going to have a second meaning, and we’re going to spend most of this episode dealing with the emotional baggage that Amethyst has.
- Okay, that’s awesome. Actually, Sardonyx is giving me a real “Fairly Odd Parents” vibe, too! Man, that show was so good before it was Spongebob’d.
- “Are you gonna smash stuff with your warhammer?” “Hm...Smash is the word one would use to describe what someone else might do.” Ah, I see we still have Pearl’s saltiness in there.
- “The proper words to describe yours truly are...Specific! Intelligent! Accurate! Faultless! Elegant… “ Man, I love the delivery on this line. It’s making it clear to me that Sardonyx has as many issues as Sugilite does, even if they’re not as apparent or outwardly destructive. She seems to enjoy making Amethyst feel absolutely awful. She’s a bully who seeks attention and hurts people in all the little, subtle ways that you can’t call her out on. The exact kind of person I hate the most. I’ve known a couple Sardonyx’s.
- Sardonyx also has amazing delivery. I wonder who her voice actress is…
Alexia Khamide, huh? She really nailed it here. Good Jorb, Alexia!
- I like how sensual they are when they defuse.
- Well, that was a lovely scene! I quite enjoyed that. I think I hate Sardonyx as a person, but she’s a really interesting character and I hope we get to see more of her.
- Well, now we’ve seen all of the Crystal Gem fusions. I think that, of the four of them, my favorite is probably Opal, even though we’ve seen so little of her.
- Okay, these two are kind of being unimaginably cute together right now. This is problematic for my Pearlmethyst shipping.
- Garnet’s “We were awesome” is kind of adorable. It’s a shame that all of these happy feelings are going to be twice as painful as they were adorable when we get to Amethyst.
- “Why, Pear? Why did you lie to me?” “I didn’t mean to…” Poor Pear. We might be getting a little metaphor here for Pearl and Garnet, I think. They hurt Amethyst without meaning too.
- Huh. The signal came back? I guess Peridot went and fixed the place again. Why didn’t Sardonyx fully destroy the place? Just absolutely ruin it?
Oh, I see. Sardonx, consciously or unconsciously, left the place unbroken so that she could be in the limelight again.
- Yeah, I really do not like Sardonyx. She’s putting people at risk and humiliating Amethyst. Clearly Garnet and Pearl are too caught up in themselves to notice what’s happening, but I hope Steven does soon, because I really feel absolutely awful for Amethyst. Nobody should have to go through something like that.
- Steven and I had the same face when Amethyst started singing.
- Man, this song is already starting off with some heavy emotions.
- “I had to use you to make me feel strong, but I don’t care about that now.” I’m already crying and we’re maybe 10 seconds into the song. Shit. I’m going to die here.
- “Can I make it up to you?” Jesus, that’s some tough stuff right there. Amethyst thinks that she’s to blame because Garnet, Pearl, and Sardonyx are all telling her. The worst part, though, is that there’s some truth to what they’re saying. Amethyst and Garnet messed up, and that’s partially Amethyst’s fault. She needs to realize, though, that it’s Garnet’s, too, and they need to find somewhere to meet in the middle here.
- They’re doing a stakeout for Peridot? I don’t think that’s going to magically solve all of their relationship issues.
- That’s some Team Rocket type stuff right there.
- I was not expecting to encounter this today.
- “It’s Peridot’s escape pod. She...fixed it somehow?” “But I thought we had it!” Oh...OH…
- So, which one is it going to be? Garnet or Pearl? Maybe both? But I don’t think Garnet would actually be on board with this one. What was it Amethyst said again? I had to use you to make me feel strong? Seems to me like Pearl is our lucky contender.
- Yeah, this is super shitty. Pearl’s lying to Garnet for emotional enjoyment. It’s basically sex under false pretenses. This is almost as shitty as what Sadie did to Lars.
- “Garnet! It’s the hub again.” What, like this one?
- “Stop!” I have no idea why, but I swear that Amethyst sounds exactly like Ash Ketchum here. Also, it’s good that Amethyst is stopping this before it can get any further. A relationship built on something as negative as this is bound to fail horribly.
- I love this shot. Being able to see both of them in real time is absolutely great for an emotional scene like this one. I could also pretty reasonably construct a metaphor about how we’re looking through Pearl’s perspective and she’s only seeing herself and what she did, although I don’t know if this will stand up at all to what’s about to happen.
- And Amethyst comes to Pearl’s defense here? That’s really interesting. I notice that we haven’t dealt with the emotional impact of Sardonyx hurting Amethyst yet, so I’m wondering if we’re going to hold onto that one for awhile. If there’s one thing characters in Steven Universe are good at, it’s holding onto negative emotions.
- Holy shit that’s ominous.
- Oh my god when did the tension in this scene get so fucking high?! Pearl looks scared for her life! I’m pretty sure it’s not because of Sardonx, too.
- Oh my god, I had my metaphor so close. I thought this episode’s focus would be about Pearl hurting Amethyst when it was actually about Pearl hurting Garnet.
- “Man, it sure would be nice if things worked out the way they do in cartoons…” “Yeah, it would.” So we’re holding this for later, then? What a way to end an episode.
- Oh shit, there’s a totally different ending theme! I really like it’s drifting ambient tones. It reminds me a lot of something you might find on the Transistor soundtrack. Maybe like a more relaxed Coasting? It’s good, though. I like it a lot.
Closing Thoughts-
This was a powerful episode. We met Sardonyx, who’s a manipulative, attention-seeking bully, and we learned that Pearl’s willing to lie to people to feel better. We also learned that Amethyst blames herself for Sugilite’s behavior exclusively, and we got some really tense drama between all of the characters. This is probably the worst we’ve seen the gems be to one another and themselves. This episode was really interesting to watch because it does a complete 180 on where it seems to be going about two thirds of the way through the episode. There’s so much to talk about with this episode, but I want to hold onto it for awhile until I have a better sense of what’s going to happen. Still, this was a great episode, and I really enjoyed it. Blind Reaction to Steven Universe Episodes 23-24
Episodes 1-2 Episodes 3-4 Episodes 5-6 Episodes 7-8 Episodes 9-10 Episodes 11-12 Episodes 13-14 Episodes 15-16 Episodes 17-18 Episodes 19-20 Episodes 21-22 Hey guys! We’re back once again with a new let’s play-er, reaction video! As usual, please avoid posting spoilers in the comments. You guys have been really fantastic about this, so I’m super glad that I can read the comments freely. I’m really looking forward to getting to episode 25, so let’s get started with…
Episode 23- Monster Buddies
Steven accidentally releases a monster from a gem bubble and attempts to tame it and takes it on an adventure. Written and Storyboarded by Lamar Abrams and Hellen Jo(Jo) - Are they trying to climb Mt. Caradhras? Not even the Fellowship managed that one.
- Oh god half of the mountain literally just collapsed. The seismic activity that a mountain falling apart would have must be enormous! May God have mercy on those poor souls caught in its strength.
- “One more attack should do it!” Well, has it changed color yet, Pearl?
- “Oh...geez..oh… WOAH, MAMA!” God, Amethyst. Please, never change. For me.
- “I’m sending you back to the temple.” You can do that? Without a teleporter? Why do you even have them, then? I need more information.
- Okay, so, Garnet bubbles Steven to send him back. Why don’t the gems bubble themselves whenever they’re in danger and send themselves home? Or just...to get around? Fast Travel is a very useful skill, guys!
- Oh. I guess this is a pretty dangerous thing to do, then, considering Pearl’s reaction. I wonder why?
- Oh! Garnet’s room! I guess that makes sense. I assumed that that’s where the gems were teleported to, since they ended up in Garnet’s room.
- The pokeball from the first episode! Nice too see you, old friend.
- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Okay, so this brings some credence to my theory that the gems used to be monsters. Here, we see a monster reforming, and we literally watch it attempt to create a humanoid form! This makes me think about that line Garnet said during Steven’s Lion,” We kept Amethyst.” If the gems actually used to be monsters, like this seems to imply, then it seems entirely likely that the gems found Amethyst and she turned into a humanoid! In fact, this could have happened very recently! That might explain why Greg hadn’t seen Sugilite before. Maybe they found Amethyst around the same time Steven was born, which would explain why Amethyst has always felt the youngest of the three gems. Anyways, let’s continue.
- Oh my god it’s fucking adorbable
- I guess Steven is going to make friends with the...thing… fuck it, let’s call it a pokemon until we get a new name for it.
- Wait is the episode actually called Monster Buddies? Is this episode going to do a Pokemon thing?
- Okay. This is a pretty appropriate reaction, but I feel like the gems are also pretty unaware of the situation. I mean, if I saw my child alone with something strange in a room used exclusively to hold evil monsters, I would have a similar reaction, so I can’t blame them, but we’re clearly meant to sympathize with the monster, so… Boo, gems!
- “I can’t say no to that face.” I know that feeling, Garnet. He’s a fucking potato!
- I’m intently studying this scene for any indication that Amethyst was once a monster, too. I have yet to find any, though.
- Okay, once again. I know that the answer is probably to let it be free and bond with Steven, but it’s a motherfucking monster that attacked them! I actually agree with the gems, even though I also believe that it’s kind of messed up.
- Lion’s here? Actually, hold on. Literally this exact same thing happened with Lion? Why are they making a huge fuss out of it now?
- Hm. So, Garnet decides to trust Steven. She thinks that he’s mature enough to know if he can handle a situation or not. This stuff is small, but these little changes are how people actually grow up. You don’t learn a lesson and become a different person, you see 100 little things and slowly change over long periods of time. Good Jorb, Steve Solar System.
- I enjoy these scenes where Steven talks to the pokemon, even though they also give me horrible anxiety because I have absolutely no ability to deal with animals that move quickly at all. In 5th grade, we had to take care of animals, and I absolutely hated it, even though I love looking at animals, because I couldn’t deal with their movement. Something about it makes me really uncomfortable.
- The return of chip chaps? I thought I would never see those ungodly things again! I already made one image for you!
- I’m really enjoying this song! It’s based on The Mother, but it has this jazzy feel to it that I really like.
- “I don’t know how you eat with an eyeball in your mouth!” OOOOHHHH! IT’S AN EYE!
- These two must become best friends. I demand it!
- “But we have to go back for the shooting star!” Oh… A shooting star?
Earlier, I theorized that we would see a new yellow gem based on the colors of the balloons. I also noticed that, on Greg’s van, there was a shooting star of the same color of yellow as the balloon. Y’all are saying that the big, exciting episode is coming up… Is this shooting star the one I theorized about? Are we about to meet a new gem?
(See, guys, I know the memes!)
- This song sounds so MMBN it’s crazy. I can just imagine this song playing over a section where Lan has to go talk to every character at some wacky expo…
God the filler in those games were bad…
- Also, all of these tight caves are giving me horrible anxiety, so I’m trying to get past them as quickly as possible. What is with this episode and it igniting my horrible phobias?
- This is really cool…
- “There it is! The shooting star!” Damn, I guess I was wrong. Maybe the new gem doesn’t emerge for a while? Maybe?
- An ancient “elemental”? Hm… So, is this thing literally the aspect of something? I could see that factoring into some interesting magic lore, but I don’t really know where to go with it. This thing feels...different, though. It’s important, somehow, but I don’t know how.
- Calm down, Pearl!
- Also, something about that shot really felt like an Adventure Time animation. Maybe it’s the shape of her head and arms, but it looks a little off-putting in Steven Universe. Maybe that was the intent? Make this thing seem so different that the animation changes to reflect that?
- “Garnet, You’ll need to use your gauntlets.” Oh, boy. This is going to go well.
- Yikes.
- Man, you really do have to feel bad for the pokemon here. Pearl and Garnet are just beating on it, and it’s just scared of their weapons. Here, I draw the line. It’s clearly just afraid of the gems hurting it, especially considering that its only interaction with them has been fighting and dying to them.
- I’m amazed at how well the animators got down the “twitchy animal” vibe. It’s absolutely perfect looking!
- “This all happened today!” I guess it did. Huh.
- Oh, man. This image is really great. Steven is holding onto the pokemon, even though its acid is clearly hurting him, because he’s willing to risk himself to help it. It’s scared, and confused, and really has an astonishing amount of character for a non-vocal monster creature.
- Oooooohhh my god that thing is dead isn’t it
- Ugh...its pupils go blank, and its whole body goes inert very slowly before it poofs. That was really sad.
- “Your mother would be so proud.” Oh, god, that’s got to be such a mixed bag of emotions for Steven. His pet dies, and then Garnet tells him that his dead parent would be proud of how he handled the situation.
- “The truth is, Rose Quartz had tried to use her powers to save these monsters, too. But she was never able to heal them.” Well, fuck. There goes all of my theories. All of them. They’re all gone now.
- Oh. I kind of already assumed he could do that? I mean, he could bubble people, so gems wouldn’t be too difficult, would it?
- Oh, wait. None of the gems were there the previous two times Steven had made a bubble. This is their first time seeing it, but Steven has already used his powers. I guess this adds another little layer to the relationship between Steven and the gems. He’s already advancing beyond what they know. He’s starting to mature without them realizing.
- Oh, man. A reprise of the intro theme? Please, spare me…
- Yeah, this is tear-worthy. That got me. Whoo!
Closing Thoughts-
This episode was great! Excluding the character breaking we got from the gems, this episode was really fun. The music was great, although nothing made my top 5 BGM’s. (Should I include that as a list, too? I think I like most of the BGM’s more than the vocal songs.) The animation was very interesting this episode, and we got a lot of little hints about the past. Overall, I really loved this one. It was fun, and upbeat, and had some good emotional weight at the end! Let’s move on to the next one!
Episode 24- An Indirect Kiss
Amethyst cracks her gemstone and Steven and the Crystal Gems try to heal her using Rose's healing tears. Written and Storyboarded by Raven M. Molisee and Paul Villeco - I’ve noticed that we’ve started to settle into pairs of writers/storyboard artists. It’s interesting, so I hope I’ll be able to identify different styles between the different groups.
- RED ALERT! RED ALERT! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! WE HAVE A CONFIRMED CONNIE SIGHTING!
- She looks...different. She seems a lot taller.
- Oh, man. He’s really just going in with the whole potato thing, huh?
- This is so pretty! Why don’t they hang out up here more often?
- So, this entire episode is a flashback setup? That’s a little new, even if I’ve seen it before in other shows. Show Me What You Got!
- “Amethyst was horsing around by the cliff.” Pretty standard, so far!
- God, I love this fucking potato. I’ve raised my son well.
- “Steven, please. I’m a gem warrior, I’m not gonna fa-” She says this in such a specific way. Like, anyone else would have just said “I’m a gem”, but she specifically adds warrior to it. It feels like this is a title that she used to go by, maybe? Y’know? Yeah, you know, yinz filthy animals.
- “Ugh! This is so embarrassing…” Have I mentioned how much I love Amethyst’s deliveries?
- That impact sounded like it hurt! Yikes.
- W-Why does she have a giant eye now?
- Oh, that cannot be good. If the gems’ gems are their real body, this must be an actual injury. They can’t just regenerate their damage if the gem itself is the damage!
- “You’re gem is cracked!” “Rude!” She’s pretty defensive about asking for help, isn’t she?
- “How could I have been so blind? We need to put a fence up there so this will never happen again!” “And that’s why there’s a fence. The end!” Uh, Steven. Steve-O, my boy, uh, aren’t you forgetting something?
- Angry Connie is the cutest.
- “Okay, okay. But only if you let me try on your glasses.” That’s a fair trade!
- Durian juice? What the fuck? Who are these people?!
- “How do I look?” “I have no idea…” Can you really not see 3 feet in front of you without your glasses? I dunno, I’m pretty functional without mine, even though my eyes may as well not exist without them.
- “Before...we had Rose.” Man, she packed a lot of emotion into that line!
- So, Steven’s mom was also the Tank Cleric, except that she had more of an emphasis on healing? I wonder how that changed the party dynamic? I imagine it would have more of a focus on Garnet frontline, with Rose supporting.
- “She felt real love for those around her, and she felt real sorrow when they were hurt.” Did she actually have to cry, or could she just create her tears? Because I know I wouldn’t be crying if my mom broke her arm, even though I love her very dearly and would feel terrible for her. I dunno, it seems a little awkward to have to actually be crying to use your powers, y’know?
- Okay, this one got me good.
- “Just today, you were crying about snakes!” “They don’t have any arms!” Don’t worry, Steve-o! I can fix that for you!
- “We need to take Amethyst to Rose’s healing spring.” Are we going to start learning more about Rose? I could really use some of that right about now.
- Okay. This is officially bad. Amethyst has gone full glitch-mode now. I guess my comparison to gems as computers during Steven the Sword Fighter was apt. It really feels like her “hardware” is damaged here, y’know?
- “And in the center of the garden, Rose’s fountain! Overflowing with your mother’s healing lacrimal essence.” Hrm…
- Pearl is really freaking out. Whatever is going on, it’s definitely hurting Pearl right now.
- “Directionless, pathetic, clinging...things.” Mhm….
- Okay, Pearl is very emotional about this place. It clearly mattered to her a lot.
- Has anyone made the reversed audio for Amethyst? Actually, I know they have. Where can I find the reversed audio for Amethyst?
- “Pain can make one cry.” This seems like a bad idea, Steven!
- So, these things are alive? Are they like the moss from Lars and the Cool Kids? And why does Rose keep tending to such dangerous plants?
- Okay, this totally feels like a model glitching out. They definitely have a computer vibe going on here.
- Now that I think about it, so did Rose’s Room. Hm…
- Pearl proceeds to make bird noises
- Okay, Pearl is having an actual breakdown now. She’s definitely got either enormous attachment to this place, or to Rose herself, and it seems really unhealthy.
- Fuckin’....eyes! ARGGGHHH! What do you mean?!?!?!
- “The fountain isn’t running.” I don’t know why I quoted this, I just did. Good… Moving on.
- “I’m getting emotional! I’m really feeling it!”
- “Steven, it’s fine...just...just stay here and watch Amethyst.” This is the first time I’ve heard Pearl sound actually frustrated and irritated by Steven.
- Okay, Amethyst has entered full spaghetti mode now.
- Why can’t I cry?! I dunno, Steven. I don’t think I’m going to have the same issues in a minute.
- “I don’t know how to feel about you...but everybody else does. I wish I could have met you. Then this place could make me sad, and I could cry healing tears, like you.”
- That was a really great scene. As someone that grew up without a parent, I can really understand where Steven is coming from. I have no relationship with my father, so I can’t imaging crying at some shrine of his that someone else tells me is important. This is a really powerful scene, and I’m really glad we get to see it.
- Also, I don’t think we’ve heard this song before, but I kind of love it.
- Amethyst screams like a monkey
- So, I assume that this is the enemy of the week? Gotta have some action, I guess.
- “Ha..ha…you...care...about...me.”
- “OH, COME ON!”
- So, Rose now has a canonical eye motif. This is good. Yes.
- God, everything with Rose is so beautiful.
- Wait, this is The Hill! God, this music is so beautiful.
- I just want you guys to know that I’ve been crying since “You care about me”, Btws.
- “I’m pretty sure Garnet and I unplugging a clogged chamber brought the fountain back to life.” Pfff…
- “Oh, Steven. You don’t have healing tears. You’ll never have any real magic powers, and we don’t want anything more to do with you.” Oh, man. For a second, that got me. I’m pretty sure that this didn’t happen, though.
- “She didn’t really say that?” Good.
- “Everyone expects me to be like my mom. What if I never get those powers?’ “Then you’ll be like me. That’s not so bad.” “But, if I don’t have powers, then I can’t hang out with Amethyst, or Garnet, or Pearl, and-and I can’t go on Missions!” “You don’t need any powers to be here with me.”
- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! KISS! KISS! KISS! KISS!
- “I can see!”
- “The Juice-Box!”
- “What am I going to tell my parents? What am I going to tell my optometrist?!”
- Wow, this is a really good shot.
- I like how the music just cuts out here. It gives the episode’s ending a lot of oomph.
Closing Thoughts-
This episode made me feel a lot of emotions. There was a lot of crying. The reprise of The Hill actually ended my existence, I think, so it’s going to be a little harder to write these from the astral plane. The animation was beautiful in this episode, especially with regards to anything Rose-related. Also, it’s very interesting to see Pearl’s breakdown over the state of the fountain. There’s definitely something else going on behind these moments, but I don’t want to pass judgement yet. Anyways, now for my episode rating! It is as follows-
- Coach Steven
- An Indirect Kiss
- Laser Light Cannon
- Giant Woman
- So Many Birthdays
As for my music listing, it goes-
- Strong in the real way
- Steven and the Stevens/Crystal Gems
- Giant Woman
- Let me drive my van into your heart
- Cookie Cat Rap
As always, guys, thanks for reading! Remember, keep all of your discussion
spoiler free! I’m really enjoying these episodes, and I would hate to be spoiled of a big emotional moment, or huge plot movement, or anything along those lines. Also,
we officially have our first piece of fanart! Thank you so much,
jaifriedpork! Finally, a question-
- What do you guys think the gems would be doing if they weren’t busy saving the day?
Until Next Time! submitted by elecathes to stevenuniverse [link] [comments]
Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond Masterpost
Edited 05/08/2018: Now that The Truth Is Out, I wrote a formal version compiling foreshadowing on The Geekiary
here!
I HAVE UPDATED THIS IN A SEPARATE POST HERE. I'm keeping this one up so that we can all have a good laugh about it once the full truth comes out. But as of today, Jan. 25, I will no longer be updating this particular post.
THEORY: Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond, former member of the "Diamond Authority" (ruling entity of Homeworld) Note: There are many variations on this theory, the most common being "Diamond is a title, not the name of the gemstone." Most of these points can be used for most RQ = PD theories, but I will specifically be presenting evidence on the veracity of Rose (and now Steven) being a literal Diamond. In addition, I am conflating Rose = Royalty (or whatever the Gem equivalent is) with Rose = Pink Diamond theories, as I believe they go hand in hand. manny_funk on the variations of this theory: We don't know if she was called Pink Diamond or Pink Debbie. Pink Diamond is just a name that stuck with fans because of Ronaldo. Ignoring the names... the main crux of the theory was that there used to be 4 ruling parties of the Homeworld, one of them being pink and post war, now there is 3, with pinky erased from the symbol. Who do we know whose distinguishing color is pink in the show? Rose. Thats what we're debating is true or not. Whether she was called Diamond, Betty, Sue or whatever are details we don't know yet.
1) The "Diamond Authority" symbols from various episodes seem to indicate there once was a pink component, but now there is not (say if she rebelled against her Homeworld...)
2) Real life rose quartz gemstones are lighter than pink diamonds.
3) (Pink) diamonds are rare and very hard, like Rose's shield.
- I'm not arguing Rose's shield is made of literal diamond. I think the shield is made of hard light construct, like everyone else's Gem weapon. I'm saying it's known for being particularly hard, which is something diamonds are also known for.
- It's true diamonds are also brittle (which I'd say fits nicely into this theory from a meta level). But ask your average layperson on the street, "what are diamonds known for?" and I bet they'd say: rare, and hard ( ͡° ͜^ ͡°)
4) In the original pilot, Steven's Gem has a gold ring around it.
5) Several pieces of clothing have pink diamonds on them
6) Rose is bigger than any Gems we've seen except for Yellow Diamond.
- There is debate about whether size means anything in terms of Gem "caste." Based on the Gems we've seen so far I believe evidence supports that it does matter.
7) Pearl is kneeling before Rose in her holo-flashback in
Rose's Scabbard. Pearl tells Connie to bow to her "liege" in Sworn to the Sword.
- Also I mean, Rose had enough clout to get a whole army to follow her. Knowing what we do about her personality, I believe she gave the option to all of her soldiers (a la Pearl in Rose's Scabbard) to fight with her or go back home.
8) The sparklies at the warp pad are pink diamonds in
Rose's Scabbard. 9) The mural in
Serious Steven. 10) There are pink diamonds on the shields at the Strawberry Fields.
11)
Rebecca Sugar packed these pins for SDCC this year 12) Greg's van has a diamond window. The lighthouse has a diamond designs as well.
- Greg's van - Remember, foreshadowing comes in many flavors. It could well be the Crewniverse chose this type of van because the diamond window is a common feature.
- Lighthouse. I bring this up because look at the lower window--does that remind you of someone's Gem?
13) Royalty foreshadowing in
Watermelon Steven - Greg calls Steven "Your Watermelajesty" (ty, fennric)
- Garnet calls Steven a King (ty, CitySparrow)
14) Royalty foreshadowing in
So Many Birthdays - Steven wearing a crown, Lion as a symbol of royalty. "Towards the end of the episode the scene where he is laying against Lion wearing his crown and cape seems like something off of a tarot card predicting that he will be gem royalty." -MonstrousGiggling
15) Lion's original design was a heraldic lion
16) The pink stuff all over the space ships in
Friend Ship (ty,
argentarachnids)
17) Pearl calls Rose "one of a kind" in the
Guide to the Crystal Gems - Now that multiple Gem types is confirmed, this is suspicious. What makes Rose so special there's only one of her?
18) Rose doesn't have much in common with the other confirmed quartz types, Jasper and Amethyst
- Her natural abilities are defensive/protective, which is interesting if quartzes are huge, loyal soldiers
- While Rose is certainly huge, the physical similarities end there. She has a different hair and a distinctly different build than Jasper. Picture
COMMON COUNTERARGUMENTS: Why would Jasper say "you have the power of Rose Quartz!" and not "You have the power of Pink Diamond!" ? - Respect for an old enemy? Rose has been Rose so long calling her anything else is weird by now? The Crewniverse wasn't planning on revealing it yet? Along with taking her symbol off the "Diamond Authority" emblem, it is now taboo to refer to her as Pink Diamond at all?
Wouldn't an actual Rose Quartz Gem exist? - Who knows? Maybe Rose named herself after a Gem type that were all crushed under the metaphorical boot of Homeworld. I don't think every single mineral has to have a Gem counterpart, though.
I don't get it. Why would Rose change her name at all? - To symbolize she was a Gem of the people? (Quartz is common, Diamond extremely rare). To honor her fusion with Pearl (also as a symbol of the Rebellion)? To distance herself from the oppression the Diamonds upheld on Homeworld? Because Earth was a "Quartz colony" ?
I think Pink Diamond is actually _____! - Great! Please feel free to write up your own theory.
Ugh, I hate hidden royalty cliches. It seems too obvious - Obvious like, Garnet is a fusion, or Pearl is one of many, or Peridot has robotic limbs? Yall, the point of this show isn't these mysteries--it's the characters, and to a lesser extent, the plot that's happening to Steven now. Plus, there's this tweet by Matt Burnett (ty, nixlheimr)
Question: Is it disheartening to the crewniverse if a fan theory predicts events in the show?
Matt's response: No. What fun is a mystery if audience isn't given the clues to figure it out themselves?
My concluding point: Not only is there a lot of evidence, (some undoubtedly more convincing than others), there is a good
narrative value to this theory. This show is about Steven Quartz Universe--whoever his mother was has to impact
him directly. But think about it--Steven coming into his "magical destiny" as the son of an ancient alien ruler and some primitive primate joe schmo, one of a kind in a species in the whole universe, the bridge between magical and mundane, made from love <3

Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond (Post StevenBomb 4 UPDATE)
Edited 05/08: Now that The Truth Is Out, I wrote a formal version compiling foreshadowing on The Geekiary
here!
Hello lovelies! I've been dragging my feet about updating this post, but here I am, finally doing it. I have decided to redo the post entirely, since there is all sorts of new context for the theory, and I thought it might be fun to preserve the "original" theory for posterity.
THEORY: Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond, former member of the Diamond Authority
Note: There are many variations on this theory. Rose + Bismuth = Pink Diamond, Rose mutilated her Gem to be Pink Diamond, all Diamonds are secret Fusions and Rose is only a component--etc. To make it easier for myself, I'm still presenting the potential evidence that supports Rose (and now Steven) being a literal Diamond, but please note that this evidence can be applied to most theories if you tweak the interpretation. Quite honestly, much of this evidence can also support Rose being a high-ranking member of Pink Diamond's court. Only time will tell! Here is an excellent summary of the post-SB4 misdirection of the theory by tumblr user oathkeeper-of-tarth.
~~~~
1) The Diamond Authority symbols from various episodes seem to indicate there once was a pink component, but now there is not. In rough chronological (in terms of Gem history) order:
2) The mural in
Serious Steven. 3) Real life rose quartz gemstones are lighter than pink diamonds.
4) (Pink) diamonds are rare and very hard, like Rose's shield.
- Not to say that the shield is made of literal diamond--just that it's known for being particularly hard, which is something diamonds are also known for.
- It's true diamonds are also brittle (which I'd say fits nicely into this theory from a meta level). But ask your average layperson on the street, "what are diamonds known for?" and I bet they'd say: rare, and hard ( ͡° ͜^ ͡°)
- A "Rose Diamond" is a specific cut. Definition according to google: "a hemispherical diamond with the curved part cut in triangular facets."
5) In the original pilot, Steven's Gem has a gold ring around it.
6) Several pieces of clothing have pink diamonds on them
7) Royalty foreshadowing
- Pearl kneeling before Rose in her holo-flashback in Rose's Scabbard
- Pearl tells Connie to bow to her "liege" in Sworn to the Sword.
- Greg calls Steven "Your Watermelajesty" in Watermelon Steven
- Garnet calls Steven a King, also in Watermelon Steven
- Steven wearing a crown, Lion as a symbol of royalty. "Towards the end of [So Many Birthdays], the scene where he is laying against Lion wearing his crown and cape seems like something off of a tarot card predicting that he will be gem royalty." -MonstrousGiggling
- Lion's original design was a heraldic lion
8) The sparklies at the warp pad are pink diamonds in
Rose's Scabbard. 9) There are pink diamonds on the shields at the Strawberry Fields.
10)
Rebecca Sugar packed these pins for SDCC this year 11) Greg's van has a diamond window. The lighthouse has a diamond designs as well.
- Greg's van - Remember, foreshadowing comes in many flavors. It could well be the Crewniverse chose this type of van because the diamond window is a common feature.
- Lighthouse. I bring this up because look at the lower window--does that remind you of someone's Gem? Plus, the windows look a lot like those at the Moon Base and in Yellow Diamon'ds lair.
12) The pink stuff all over the space ships in
Friend Ship 13)
Pearl calls Rose "one of a kind" in the Guide to the Crystal Gems 14) Rose doesn't have much in common with the other confirmed quartz types, Jasper and Amethyst
- Her natural abilities are defensive/protective, which is interesting if quartzes are huge, loyal soldiers.
- While Rose is certainly huge, the physical similarities end there. She has a different hair and a distinctly different build than Jasper. Picture
- Ian JQ on this
if Rose is a quartz, why is that she's much more friendly looking, and has protection/healing powers if she's built to fight? Ian Jones-Quartey: quartz soldiers are intended for armies, meaning some of them need defensive powers as well. they can't all be tanks.
Does this mean that Rose is definitely a quartz? Ian Jones-Quartey: Yo her name is Rose QUARTZ
15)
It Could've Been Great 16)
There exists a famous diamond named "Pink Star Diamond") ty,
u/noordleoordle 17)
You can hear Blue Diamond-like tones in Rose's music COMMON COUNTERARGUMENTS: I.
Skinny mural legs! Other Diamonds have a kite cut! No one recognized her during The Answer! She's way smaller than Blue or Yellow Diamond! Jasper said: "You have the Power of Rose Quartz!" - Yes, if this theory turns out to be right, it seems very likely Rose altered her form significantly to be Rose Quartz. (Psst: revisit point #2)
II.
The Guide lists Steven's Gem type as "Quartz" - The Guide is also explicitly "written by" Steven, and as far as he knows, he's a quartz.
III.
Peridot calls Steven "some kind of quartz" in When It Rains - Peridot knows Steven is from Earth (a Quartz Colony), has heard him being called a Quartz, and that line is even, "you're some kind of quartz, right?" As in she doesn't actually know what he is. EVEN SO, counterarguments II and III might very well be legit if Rose/Steven is truly a quartz, and only a part of PD.
IV.
Wouldn't an actual Rose Quartz Gem exist? - Who knows? Maybe Rose named herself after a Gem type that were all crushed under the metaphorical boot of Homeworld. I don't think every single mineral has to have a Gem counterpart, though. And even if she is a quartz, she's "one of a kind," according to the Guide.
V.
I don't get it. Why would Rose change her name/form at all? - To symbolize she was a Gem of the people? To honor her fusion with Pearl (also as a symbol of the Rebellion)? To distance herself from the oppression the Diamonds upheld on Homeworld? Because Earth was a "Quartz colony" ?
VI.
Newbie Review Update: Extended Intro & Episodes 63-65
Guess who? Its your friendly neighborhood newbie of course! Can I still call myself a newbie? I've watched like eighty percent of the show now...but I guess it doesn't really matter until I get all the way caught up. Anyway, back again to see some more episodes. I'm excited and sad at the same time because I feel like the next several episodes will only get better based on what I've seen of season two so far but at the same time...I really liked doing these posts and meeting all you guys and sharing my reactions with you and seeing your reactions to mine. Its gonna be a bit sad when I do the last one of these...it'll be like finishing a book series and just not knowing what to do with yourself afterwards.
But we'll cross that bridge when we reach it I guess! Onwards and upwards!
One thing before we start, I know from the comments on the last post that this set of episodes was apparently dubbed "The week of Sardonyx" by the Crew. Assuming Sardonyx is a new character of some sort due to it being a gemstone...I looked up pictures of what actual sadonyx looks like. They usually seem to be a red-orangeish color with white bands. Hmmmm...maybe its the name of a new fusion? We haven't seen Steven fuse with any of the gems...OH MY GOSH GUYS WHAT IF ITS THE NAME OF STEVEN'S FIRST GEM BASED FUSION?! THAT WOULD BE SO EPIC.
Enough speculation though, lets go!
You can find my last post
here. Alright I meant to do this in the last post but I kind of went overboard with some exposition so I'm going to take the time to do it now...here I go watching the much alluded to extended intro.
Extended intro: Hey look! The house is being built!
GASP This must a prequel of sorts!
- Haha...Greg actually wearing a shirt that has sleeves.
- I never thought Steven could get any cuter until I saw him at like...five years old...LOOK AT HIS LITTLE FEET AND HIS OVERSIZED SHIRT AAAAAAAHHH.
- That little "Umm..." and he's so shy!
- "We'll like it...even if its bad!" I see Amethyst has ALWAYS been the brutal honesty type.
- Sings the themesong along with Steven. Its been a long time since I've heard the intro he sang in the pilot! So many warm memories of...two or three weeks ago...lol.
- WELCOME HOME STEVEN!
- OH MY GOD GUYS PEARL'S SINGING NOW THIS JUST GOT ELEVEN BILLION TIMES BETTER.
- Awwww...that last look Greg gave the gems as he left the house...I wonder...if that was legitimately the last time Greg got to feel what it was like to live with his son. That's so sad to think about.
- CUE THE MONTAGE. WE'VE COME SOOOOO FAR!
- "I will fight for the place where I'm free to live together and exist as me!" WOOOOO! SING IT, GARNET!
- "I will fight in the name of Rose Quartz and everything that she believed in!" Facepalm I guess Pearl hasn't moved on one bit eh?
- "I will fight for the world I was made in, the Earth is everything I've ever known!" Am I the only one that finds it weird that of the original CGs only Amethyst is actually fighting for Earth? I mean I guess it makes sense when you think about it but its such a stark contrast to the beginning of the show when you're lead to believe they're all the guardians of the Earth simply because they like it here...Pearl does it because she's obsessed, Garnet does it because I guess the Earth is a haven for gay space rocks...Amethyst does it because SHE WAS BORN HERE AND THIS IS HER HOME, DAMMIT. I like Amethyst's reason the best.
- "I will fight to be everything that everybody wants me to be when I'm grown!" Two things about this. One, its kind of sad that Steven's motivation is to be like his mom because everyone expects him to fill Rose's shoes...I guess he'll learn eventually that its just better if he tries to be his own person. Two, I'VE SAID THIS BEFORE; I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS WHEN YOU HIDE A CHARACTER'S EYES...ALSO THAT SMILE AND POSE. WHAT ARE YOU UP TO, ROSE?!
- Now that's an anime shot if I ever saw one...The villians standing above the heroes ominously--WAIT...WHO THE FUCK IS THAT?!
- THAT. HEAD TURN. THO.
- I can only assume based on what I know of the homeworld gems and the diamond authority as well as the characters mentioned in the show...that that is none other than YELLOW DIAMOND. And holy shit am I intimidated and excited all at the same time...FINALLY, THE BIG BAD REVEALS HERSELF.
Well guys that was everything I could have hoped for and more. Its a rather good thing if even your opening themes have characterization in them...and this show has characterzation coming out of its ears. Once again the singing was on point! Kinda wondering who all was singing during that shot of all the gems together plus Yellow Diamond...I could make out Estelle's voice and maybe DeeDee's but there was one other voice in there that was higher pitched that I couldn't make out...oh well.
Cry for Help: More Crying Breakfast Friends!
- "I don't get this cartoon, man!" Neither do I, Amethyst.
- As much as Steven's TV gets busted I'm not surprised this one stopped working.
- OH HI PERIDOT! WATCHA DOIN?!
- SHE'S SENDING AN SOS TO YELLOW DIAMOND. NOT GOOD.
- Hehehe...Steven riding in Lion's mane dimension.
- The communication hub...from waaaaaay back in Coach Steven when we first saw Sugilite? ARE WE GONNA SEE SUGILITE AGAIN?!
- "Last time was a disaster." Well gee Garnet...why don't you shame Amethyst a little bit more?
- Garnet took her shades off! I missed those three different colored eyes of hers!
- "Its you and me, Pearl!" WELL SLAP MY ASS AND CALL ME A RASPBERRY, I DID NOT SEE THAT ONE COMING.
- "Don't cry, Pearl." Seriously Pearl, you're making this awkward.
- This aint your average sauciness...this is...ADVANCED SAUCINESS!
- YOOOOOO, SAR-DO-NYX! I was right! It was a new fusion! She wears a tux and has Peridot's triangle shaped hair! And she wears shades like Sugilite and Alexandrite do! I'm just going to assume that any fusion that Garnet is a part of has to come with some type of shades.
- "GIANT WOMAN!" I can see the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
- DAT LAUGH THO. Its so...haughty.
- "I could literally squish you right now, it would not be hard!" PLEASE DON'T.
- "I haven't exactly been myself lately." Badumtish.
- SHE GETS A GIANT HAMMER?! THAT'S RADICAL.
- "Smash is the word one uses to describe what someone else might do." IS THIS ENTIRE EPISODE DEDICATED TO MAKING AMETHYST FEEL SHITTY FOR SUGILITE?!
- "Elegant, graceful, controlled..." Literally none of those things describe the hammer, Sardonyx.
- Between the dance, how the two separated, and their celebration afterwards I have no doubt in my mind that this episode fueled GarnetXPearl ships for all time.
- Steven sitting in Garnet's lap is my new favorite thing.
- Well damn...guess Peridot's not gonna be stopped that easily.
- I can't get enough of Sardonyx's laugh.
- Awwww...Amethyst's song...SHE JUST WANTED TO FEEL LIKE SHE BELONGED GUYS, IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK?!
- I refuse to believe that cactus ISN'T Peridot...its too conveniently placed and too conveniently shaped like her.
- The magic sausage trick! Steven is such a little kid!
- What the hey hey?! I thought the Crystal gems had Peridot's pod?!
- THAT'S NOT PERIDOT.
- PEARL?! BUT WHO...BUT HOW...BUT WHY?! WHY?!?!?
- So she fixed the hub...so she could fuse with Garnet? I mean...YOU COULDN'T JUST ASK GARNET?! DO THESE GEMS EVER JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER?!
- "This is no good!" SHUT THE FUCK UP, PEARL.
- "She's evading my future vision." You can do that?!
- "But we can destroy this hub as many times as we need to! Together!" Is there no end to Pearl's thirst?
- AW SHIT, CAT'S OUTTA DA BAG NOW.
- Amethyst coming to Pearl's aid?! WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH AMETHYST?!
- MOMMA GARNET IS PISSED.
- "Amethyst, fuse with me!" Oh I get it...so its not okay to trick someone into fusing with you but its okay to order someone to do it? I see how it is, Garnet.
Well we got to see Sugilite again but I'm not happy about it at all. I'm just so...disappointed in all of the gems this episode. Don't get me started on Pearl...then there's Garnet over here making Amethyst feel like shit and acting all righteously indignant even though she didn't even bother asking Amethyst to fuse...she just told her to do it. DO THE GEMS EVER JUST HAVE A NORMAL CONVERSATION WITH EACH OTHER?! I feel like a lot of this kind of stuff could have been sorted if they were just...honest with each other.
Welp...trouble in the Universe household. Looks like Garnet and Pearl aren't even on speaking terms anymore...and with Peridot and Malachite still on the loose...awww man guys...our little family's falling apart ;_;
Keystone Motel: "I know that you're all...disappointed...in me." Just a tad.
- Oooof...the cold shoulder. Damn, Garnet.
- Impeccable timing as always Greg!
- "You mean the Keystone state?" "Right the state named Keystone." Pfffft...Crewniverse you slay me. Guess we're goin to good ol'd Penn. state eh guys?
- "I don't like those brushes...they feel weird on your fur." Steven you don't have...OH MY GOD HE'S TALKING ABOUT THAT TIME HE TURNED INTO A BLOB OF CATS.
- My experience of motels has left me a lot less optimistic about this trip.
- "I'm coming too." Say what?! Why would Garnet want to go to a motel?
- Once again, Greg's expression of confusion and despair reflects my own...I've never seen the Gems be such...assholes to each other.
- Checking for bedbugs...shudders.
- SOMETHING'S UP WITH GARNET. The camera keeps zooming in on her and she's grimacing and shit. And...her hand's shaking?
- "If I'm not back in an hour...call the police." Craigslist.
- Garnet's...arguing with herself...HOLY SHIT SHE SPLIT UP.
- RUBY AND SAPPHIRE, I MISSED YOU GUYS.
- This situation is only marred by the fact that they've split up because they're angry at each other.
- Can't you see I'm completely engulfed with rage?" Not really.
- Did Ruby just steam her own tears? Ruby...chillax.
- Hahaha...she burned the carpet! Ruby has no chill at all!
- HOLY SHIT...RUBY JUST BOILED THE POOL. Talk about steaming mad.
- "The channels are all the wrong numbers." Hah...this was a mystery to me as a kid too.
- So Sapphire has future vision as well? Wow...she's...really pretentious. Never thought about how pretentious someone who can see the future might be but its easy to see why Ruby is so mad at her.
- Welp, Greg didn't die. Yay!
- "Oh boy...where's the other one?" GREG KNOWS ABOUT RUBY AND SAPPHIRE?!
- "SQUARE PIZZA!?" OH MY GOD SAPPHIRE JUST SAID STEVEN WOULDN'T LIKE IT...THIS SHOW I SWEAR.
- "Son, there will come a time in your life when you will learn to accept all pizza." Can Greg adopt me please?
- "Sometimes people who love each other hurt each others' feelings without meaning to." Ugh...tell me about it.
- "But I think they'd work it out if they just talked to each other!" RIGHT?! IS IT SO HARD TO HAVE A CONVERSATION?!
- Breakfast with the squabbling lovebirds...this won't be awkward at all.
- Let me just stop right here and say how awesome Greg is. Garnet invites herself on this trip, has a meltdown in the middle of it, and now he's abiding by Ruby and Sapphire having their little squabble while he's trying to eat breakfast. GREG IS THE MOST CHILL DUDE I'VE EVER SEEN, I'D HAVE TOLD THE LITTLE SHITS TO FUCK OFF BY NOW.
- ETERNAL FLAME, COMIN THROUGH. Did we just see Ruby's weapon?
- Good job you two...YOU MADE STEVEN UPSET.
- "It just came with us...I don't understand...is it me?!" YOU TWO APOLOGIZE TO STEVEN RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.
- "I keep looking into the future where all of this has been solved as if it doesnt matter how you feel in the present." On the one hand I can understand how that sucks...on the other, yeah, you were being a bit of a jerk.
- SAPPHIRE'S A CYCLOPS, YOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
- "You know what's nice about being split up? I get to look at you." OH, HEEEEEEEEELLL NAAAAWWW. SOMEBODY FIND RUBY'S WALLET. ITS THE ONE THAT SAYS "SMOOTH MOTHERFUCKER" ON IT.
- Seriously Greg, you just lost your smooth throne to a rock.
- "LAUGHY SAFFY" THESE TWO I SWEAR.
- Jeez you two, get a room.
- NEVER THOUGHT I'D BE SO HAPPY TO SEE GARNET.
- Awwwwwww...Amethyst and Pearl consoling each other in the house. [SHIPPING INTENSIFIES]
THAT WAS A ROLLERCOASTER...One the one hand I'm glad we got to see the two little love rocks again, on the other...they were only present because of all the angst. This arc has soooo much angst I swear. Greg continues to be the greatest dad in existence and...Steven had a moment of self doubt worth mentioning. Blaming himself for the adults fighting...that's such a kid thing and I'm really glad Ruby and Sapphire were at least able to stop fighting long enough to assure him that he wasn't at fault.
Onion Friend: From the title I'm assuming this is an Onion episode...damn...we havent had one of those since what...Onion Trade?
- Poor Amethyst...much like Steven she's like the kid trapped between feuding adults. I've been there and its enough to sap the life out of you.
- HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SITTING THERE, ONION?!
- ARE WE ABOUT TO SEE WHAT ONION'S HOUSE LOOKS LIKE?!
- He...has a thing for...Amethyst? Speechless noises
- "That's really weird!" TELL ME ABOUT IT.
- HOLY SHIT SHE'S GOT A GUN.
- Vidalia!? Who is---OH...SHE WAS THE WOMAN WITH MARTY BACK IN STORY FOR STEVEN.
- AMETHYST KNOWS VIDALIA?!
- VIDALIA IS ONION'S MOM?!
- PSYCHO MAN-- oh wait...nevermind.
- Vidalia and Amethyst...the two troublemakers. I like where this is going.
- "You don't know what I've done in these shoes!" Eeeeeyyyyyyyyyyy.
- Okay so...Vidalia is both Sour Cream and Onion's mom it looks like...so I guess she broke it off with Marty, yeah she did. And then she hooked up with the fisherman dude...Yellowtail. So...ohmigod Sour Cream looks a LOT like Marty so I guess that would make him and Onion half brothers? That's interesting, this show has non traditional families coming out of its ears.
- This entire family is so weird and I love them all.
- Does Onion actually speak English or does his family just understand mumble speak?
- "What are ya gonna do? Kids gotta express themselves." I wish more parents would think like this.
- ONION HAS A SNAKE...ONION IS A SNEEPLE.
- NO STEVEN, DON'T FEED THE MOUSE TO IT.
Birth video
- Mobius_Uno.exe has stopped responding
- "I can't take much more of this." Steven speaking for me yet again.
- "I'm inspired by you, Amethyst." I'm really glad Amethyst and Vidalia could hook up again...everyone needs a shoulder to cry on every once in a while.
- Onion has a secret room off of his bedroom accessible through an air vent...because of course the little weirdo does.
- AWWWWWWWWWW...Onion aint so bad after all!
- "Welp, thanks for breakin into my house!" I'm not sure if walking through a tarp qualifies.
- I KEPT MY COOL UNTIL THE MOUSE IN THE MOUTH THING...COFFEE ALL OVER MY GODDAMNED SCREEN.
I expected that to be a lot less heartwarming than it was but I'm grateful it managed to be both weird and heartwarming at the same time. Vidalia's so awesome! And she's a painter! You go girl!
SUDDEN REALIZATION: DO YOU THINK VIDALIA PAINTED THE PORTRAIT OF ROSE IN STEVEN'S HOUSE?!
Alright guys I know I'm stopping in the middle of the Stevenbomb for this one but I'm gonna put a pin in this post here so that I have a decent amount of episodes for my last couple of posts...four and four respectively if I count the remaining ones correctly.
I honestly wasn't expecting the show to take this sort of turn. If you asked me beforehand if Pearl was capable of doing something like this I would have said no. I guess it just goes to show you how much baggage the gems hide from one another. As a person this is a bit frustrating because the obvious answer is for the gems to have an honest and open conversation about it but you know...easier said than done. I wonder how they'll resolve all this.
Well, you already know but tune in next time to see my reaction to it I guess!
On the Weapons of Fusions
There's no real way we can predict what a Garnet/Pearl fusion would look like (there's too many different types of gemstones to guess accurately). However, one thing we can think about is
the fusion's weapon. Opal's weapon is a bow. This was formed by combining Pearl's spear (the stick) and Amethyst's whip (the bowstring).
Sugilite's weapon is a sort of wrecking ball, formed by combining Amethyst's whip (the rope) and Garnet's fist (the ball itself).
If you notice here, all the fusion's weapons are
combinations of the composite Gem's weapons. By this logic, we can conclude that a Garnet/Pearl fusion would comprise of a blunt object (Garnet's fists) combined with a rod or stick.
I think this would come in the form of
some kind of war hammer. What do you guys think? Do you think a Garnet/Pearl fusion's weapon would be a hammer, or not?
What do you think a Steven/Gem's weapon would be (a flying disk?)?
Do you think a Steven/Gem fusion would even be a woman?
How Strong IS Lapis Lazuli?
We know for a fact that Lapis has incredibly strong hydro-kinetic abilities, as she was able to manipulate the entire ocean and turn it into a spire that behaved both like a solid and a liquid depending on what Lapis wanted it to do. Not only that, but her "gem weapon" (yes I am calling it that for the sake of simplicity) is a set of water wings, granting her the ability to fly. Which anyone who has ever taken a physics class EVER, or better yet has seen what this magical thing called water is, knows that that is impossible (look at me; applying logic to a cartoon). Yet we have seen that Lapis is able to take water and make some one stand in it when it's not even frozen and have it fall to earth in cubes when she's done with it. But is that really the scope of her abilities?
Take a look back to when we first saw Lapis in the episode "Mirror Gem." Lapis was able to break the very rules of the device she was in, crafting new memories and editing them in order to make a conversation. You could argue it's because the device was damaged, but if we look at the reaction of the gems when they heard Lapis was talking and we can tell that what Lapis was doing should never have happend. What's more, Lapis was not only able to show memories she had made in the mirror, but also was able to warp them and mesh them together. To go further, Lapis was able to create a new image in order to show Steven how to set her free. That alone breaks the rules of the mirror, which are to show memories of what the gem has seen, not what the gem can imagine. To go further, as she's breaking free, her hydro-kinetic powers were able to reach out and interact with the ocean without her being in her physical form. With everything we know about gems, that alone should be impossible. So what does that mean?
Gems exist as physical manifestations of light created by their gems. Essentially everything a gem is, all it's thoughts, feelings, and appearances, are contained inside their gemstone. Essentially, the gem is like their mind, projecting itself into reality. All a gems powers are controlled and altered by it's mental state, as seen with corruption and fusion, and it's ability to express that is dependent on the stability of that mind. Lapis isn't depressed or has PTSD as it may appear. She might be a little sad and has some social anxiety and self confidence problems, but if she had any real mental issues her physical form whould show it. Which means she has a perfectly stable and healthy mind, meaning her mental powers are also at their prime.
When focused, her mental power is beyond anything we can possibly imagine, and we have only seen a fraction of her potential. I'm not even going to mention the fact that she was able to stay fused with someone for months by force when an act like that absolutely exhaust a gem as seen by Garnet and Amethyst when they were stuck as Sugilite. Not convinced? Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem explain it all. Gems are mental beings, a projection of their own minds. When cracked, a gem can't sustain that form without immense amounts of concentration, and even then they start to fall apart. From just a tiny crack, Amethyst began glitching and falling to pieces, and Eyeball had to fight to keep from completely deforming. Lapis was cracked, and she never faulted. She showed no concentration, no effort, and the only variation was her eyes. Her bodied remained physical throughout the entire two episodes, never faltering, even though her crack was larger than both Amethyst and Eyeball. Not to mention she was able to manipulate an entire ocean, create perfect clones of the Crystal Gems with arguably more power, and project herself in water without any wavering in what she was doing. She was even able to have a full conversation while doing it. Her power transcends anything we could possibly imagine, and now she's whole. Good thing she's on our side. She could very well rip the planet in half without even batting an eye. But then she would lose the only thing her powers good for.
Oops.
How Steven Universe has affected Google's Image Search
Minor spoiler warning for character names, I guess.
I recently came across
this post from way back when, and I began to wonder how much Steven Universe has affected google's search algorithms. To see how, I decided to see how early the different gems would come out in a google image search of the gem's name.
For an unbiased test, I went in incognito mode, entered only the name of the gemstone for an image search, and then counted how many pictures there were until I got to a picture of the character themself, whether it was fanart or images from the show. They're ordered here from lowest to highest.
- Rainbow Quartz - 1
- Yellow Diamond - 1
- Sugilite - 2
- Blue Diamond - 3
- Peridot - 4
- Rose Quartz - 12
- Sardonyx - 13
- Garnet - 15
- Malachite - 20
- Pearl - 21
- Jasper - 26 (funnily enough, there was only one picture of a Jasper rock. The rest were for the national park)
- Lapis Lazuli - 29
- Amethyst - 34
- Sapphire - 38
- Alexandrite - 41
- Ruby - 65
- Opal - Not even on the first page. My estimate is around 570, given 82 rows with 7 images per row. However, an image of Opal's chest gem used on the Steven Universe wiki comes up as the 43rd result.
Make of this what you will.
